Physical Education Observation
1. What activities does the teacher do to launch the lesson/activity with the students?
The teacher that I observed would have the students do some warm up activities when the
class first started. Then the teacher would have the students run or walk around the
gymnasium for approximately 5 minutes. After the students did that the teacher would
start the activity.
2. What instructional materials are used to teach the lesson/activity?
The teacher set up a variety of stations for the students to participate in. He would also
have the students switch stations about every 5 minutes. Each student would have the
opportunity to do each station. The teacher said that depending on what the activity is
depends on if there will be stations or not.
3. Are rules discussed while organizing students for the lesson/activity? What verbal and/or
non-verbal cues does the teacher use to control the students?
Yes, the teacher would explain to the students what they need to do for that day before he
would start the lesson. There is a list of the general rules was posted on the wall. The
teacher will use a whistle when it is time to switch stations. If the students are being
disruptive or not listening he will sometimes tell the students to either pay attention or
they will have to exercises again. He allow mention that sometimes he will make them
dance if they wont start paying attention
4. What varieties of learning strategies are used during the lesson/activity?

Adams2

The teacher will do demonstrations of certain skills to the students so they have an idea of
what they need to do. He will usually have them sit in a circle while he explains what
they are doing for the day. He will sometimes play music while the students do the
activity or lesson.
5. If guided practice is used, how or when is it used?
The teacher will walk around the gymnasium to see how the students are doing with the
activity. He will show them how to do something if they are having difficulty with the
activity. If the entire class does not understand how to do something he will have them sit
in a circle to show them how to do it.
6. What portion of the students is actually engaged in the learning process midway through
the lesson/activity?
I thought the majority of the students seem to be engaged during the activity. They
seemed to be having fun with the activity.
7. If independent practice is used, how is it organized? For example, what are students
expected to do when they finish early?
The teacher tries to make the activity last the entire class time. The students dont usually
finish early with the activity or lesson.
8. What provisions does the teacher make to accommodate student diversity?
He doesnt usually have to make accommodations for student diversity. He said whenever
a special needs student is in the class; there are aides with the students. So this doesnt
apply to him.
