Before I begin, I want to clear up

some confusion about who is who
in the Crab Tales team.
Since I took over from Philip as the
editor, I am responsible for getting
advertising and some editorial.
My contact details are below.
Lis (with ans) is Philips wife
and she deals with all Special &

Crab Tales and has the final say of
what goes into the paper as well as
dealing with our long term regular
advertisers and some editorial.
The Crab Tales office address is:

We are also keen to attend special

events, when we can, to report on
the hard work by our communities
to improve situations and we hope
to hear from you soon.
This issue contains four pages of
details of the candidates for the
NNDC Elections on May 7th but
we only had space for the wards
covered by the Crab Tales.

Dear Editor,

First, thank you very much for the publicity

that you have given to our production of
The Elixir of Love.
Although we cannot gauge the value to
the society in terms of tickets sold, it
gave a great boost to everyone
involved with the show.
Thank you again

Dear Liz King,

My dear wife, whose name for the moment

escapes me, made a joke the other night and
has asked me to share it with your readership.
We were talking about the policy of the town
council to turn off certain street lights to save
money. At one point she tittered: Perhaps
they should call it Cromer in Gloom.
Do you see what she did there? Mucked about
with the Cromer in Bloom slogan.
She doesnt often make jokes, and twice woke
up during the night & laughed till the bed shook.
I didnt think it was all that funny myself, but
there you are.
Talking of Cromer in Bloom, I see someone is
finally getting round to doing something about

the eyesore on the corner of the bus station.

I know the perfect spot to relocate those
enormous pale blue concrete flower pots
- its five miles north of Cromer.
Yours faithfully
Philip Graham

Dear Liz,

We would like to bring to the attention of your

readers the event to Save Knaptons Angels
on Saturday May 23rd at Knapton Church.
(Full details on page 18)
We are a voluntary group of musicians who
met doing voluntary work for the North
Norfolk Railway.
The singers are Julie & Andy Weston who live
in Knapton, accompanied by Teresa Williams
from Sheringham on the keyboard and Gerald
Thomas from Ormesby on the drums.
Knapton Church has a beautiful double hammer
beam roof & is endowed with 160 carved painted
angels which is unique in Europe.
In addition to repairing the roof to preserve the
angels the tower is also in need of urgent repair
which will allow the bells to once again ring
out over the village. This restoration work will
be carried out through support by the Heritage
Lottery Repair Fund.

Dear Liz,

Thank you for your support in bringing Crab

Tales out to us our owners and our holiday
guests really do appreciate them on park
Our holiday guests keep coming in saying
how fantastic it gives them an idea of the
things going on in the local area.
One of our owners Lenny Barber from Spalding
has been coming to his caravan for many many
years & supports your Crab Tales so much and
is the one owner in the past we could always rely
on for a hand full in reception, he has just had a
hip operation so is currently unable to get to the
caravan he has insisted I send him his Crab
Tales and not to let our other owners down in
his absence! Lol (wouldnt dare)!

Above is a picture of Lennys Caravan (which

all our other owners now have to rally round to
keep the flowers well watered). Lenny would
be so happy to see this.
Regards and again thank you for dropping the
Crab Tales off for us and your ongoing support.

Dear Liz,

I am writing to thank all those who kindly donated

delicious cakes and prizes to sell & raffle at the
Coffee Morning held at Gimingham village
Hall on April 18th to raise funds for the
Cromer Hospital Dialysis Patient Fund.
I would also like to thank the few people in a
small village who attended & met friends to
chat and catch up with local news and those
who volunteered their time thus making it a
successful event. A total of 270.75p was
raised for the fund. Well done everyone!
Kind Regards,
Colin Hart

The committee expressed its thanks to Inner

Wheel for their generosity, and for supporting
the campaign.
The skate park will undoubtedly be a huge asset
to the young people of the town. It will also make
Cromer a more attractive destination and will
benefit the life of the town as a whole.

upon the completion of construction and it is
never too late to get involved, if you feel you
might be able to contribute in any way, please

Dear Editor,

We would just like to thank you for helping to

advertise our book sale.

Dear Editor,

Cromer & Sheringham Inner Wheel Club has

donated 200 to Cromer Skate Park campaign.
Construction of the skate park on the Meadow

ready for the start of the summer season.
On Thursday 2nd April, at Virginia Court in
Cromer, a cheque for 200 was handed over
by Michelle Nash, President of the Cromer

Charities

Waitrose in North Walsham supports three local

charitable projects each month, with customers
voting for the charity of their choice.
Trimingham Lunch Ladies received their share
of the monthly monies donated by customers
in the Nth Walsham store during February.

Curry was a surname.

A takeaway was a mathematical problem.
Pizza was something to do with a leaning tower.
All potato chips were plain; the only choice we
had was whether to put the salt on or not.
Rice was only eaten as a milk pudding.
Calamari was called squid and used as fish bait.
A Big Mac was what we wore when it rained.
Brown bread was something only the poor ate.
Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking.
Tea was made in a teapot and never green.
Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days and
cubed sugar was regarded as posh.
Fish didnt have fingers in those days.
Eating raw fish was called poverty, not sushi.
None of us had ever heard of yoghurt.

Healthy food consisted of anything edible.

People who didnt peel potatoes were regarded
as lazy.
Indian restaurants were only found in India.
Cooking outside was called camping.
Seaweed was not a recognised food.
Kebab wasnt even a word, never mind a food.
Prunes were medicinal.
Surprisingly, muesli was readily available, it
was called cattle feed.
Water came out of the tap and if someone had
suggested bottling it and charging more than
petrol for it, they would have become a
laughing stock!!
The one thing that we never ever had on our
table in the fifties .....

394.00 to Linda Brown (Secretary) and
Dot Bradley (Treasurer) of Trimingham
Pilgrim Shelter.
Both ladies are involved with the organisation
on a monthly basis, helping to prepare and
serve the lunches.
The Pilgrim Shelter is the only building in the
community & is a unique opportunity for its
members to meet, chat & have a nice lunch.
They will use the money donated by Waitrose
customers to help pay for some badly needed
new cutlery & some new comfortable chairs.

Administering An
Insolvent Estate

Written by Anna French Chartered Legal

Executive with Hayes + Storr
Dealing with the administration of an estate of
a friend or family member can be a daunting
prospect, particularly if there are a number
of debts outstanding and not many assets.
It is very important in cases such as these to
ensure that the debts are repaid in the correct
order, as failure to do so could result in the
Executor becoming personally liable.
If these are sufficient assets to pay all the debts
but not to pay all of the legacies and gifts made
by the Will, then the estate is solvent. All debts
must be paid and then the legacies reduced
proportionately.
If there are insufficient assets to pay the debts,
then the estate is insolvent. It is essential for
the Executor to obtain full details of all the
outstanding debts.
The Executor should also consider placing
Statutory Notices to creditors in a local
paper and the London Gazette.
This would provide protection for the
Executor if any unknown creditors
came forward in the future.
The Executor then needs to prepare a list of the
debts. Secured creditors take priority and this
includes mortgages registered against properties.
The usual course of action would be for the
creditor to obtain payment by releasing the
security (i.e. selling the property).
Reasonable funeral and administration expenses,
which includes legal fees, are next in line and
can be paid before other liabilities.
The unsecured debts must then be paid in the
order of priority according to the Administration
of Insolvent Estates of Deceased Persons
Order 1986.
The first of these are preferred debts.
These include wages or salary owed by the
deceased to an employee. Ordinary debts
follow and this includes overdrawn bank
accounts, credit cards and outstanding
care fees. This is the category where
most debts are likely to fall.

The next category

is the deferred
debts and this
would include a
loan made to the
deceased by his
or her spouse.
The debts must be
paid in the order
of priority and so
all preferred debts
would have to be
paid in full before
moving down to
the ordinary debts
and so on.
If there are insufficient assets pay all the debts
in one category, then they must all be reduced
proportionately and the figures agreed with the
creditors. If no agreement can be reached, an
application to Court will be needed.
There are complex rules regarding property
which is co-owned and passes automatically
to the surviving owner, and whether this can
also be taken into account when calculating
the funds available to pay the debts.
This can therefore be a complicated area and
the Executors should do all they can to protect
themselves from personal liability.
If you find yourself in this position, we would
recommend that you take legal advice as soon
as possible.

Do You Know......

.....someone whose work for wildlife deserves

to be recognised?
The Norfolk Biodiversity Partnership is looking
for wildlife heroes working to make a difference
for nature and people in local communities.
The Community Biodiversity annual Awards
are organised by the Norfolk Biodiversity
Partnership who work to co-ordinate and
share initiatives to conserve biodiversity
across Norfolk.
Last year we made 12 awards for outstanding
projects, such as the toadwatch patrollers from
Cranwich who ensured that thousands of toads
safely crossed the road to reach their spawning
grounds; volunteer groups from Scarning, Southrepps Common, W. Runton, Gt. Massingham,
Hunstanton, Hethel Churchyard and Earlham
Cemetery, three inspiring individuals: Martin
George; Sean Locke & Richard Waddingham,
and the Norfolk Bat Survey an innovative
countywide project.
Can you help find this years winners?
We are looking for individuals, businesses, local
groups & parish & town councils involved with
action to improve the local environment for nature.
In judging the awards, we look for evidence of
biodiversity enhancement, as well as the degree
of community involvement, and project longterm sustainability.
If you know of someone or a group who you feel
fits the bill (or you would like to enter yourself),
please use our special form which can be
downloaded from the NBP site.
Nominations should be made with the knowledge
and consent of the project/individual.
Nominations close on: Friday 22nd May.
Awards will be presented across these
five themed categories:
Parish & Town Councils (recognising councils
whose direct activities have led to improvements
in local biodiversity)
Inspiring Others (recognising those who have
gone the extra mile to bring about a wider
appreciation of biodiversity)
Best Group (recognising efforts to create or
organise the best project/ site for biodiversity,
encouraging local access)
Outstanding Land Manager (recognising landowners & managers who have created opportunities for biodiversity and made provision for
community access)
Themed Award heathlands (recognising action
taken by local communities to improve this
important habitat in Norfolk).

Folk on the Pier Fringe Events

As the main programme at the Pavilion Theatre

moves evermore towards sell out concerts, the
event has turned its attention to the annual raft
of fringe events that take place around various
venues in Cromer over the weekend.
As always the mix of styles is wide ranging and
visitors to the town can expect a mix of anything
from traditional folk to the pure experimental.
As with any folk festival fringe, open mike and
sessions form the backbone of the programming
but set performances include anything from Cajun
Rock to Mediaeval based comedy and music.
The Albion Inn will see a full programme hosted
by Urban Folk Theory culminating a session with
Hayley Moyses Britgrass Three.
On Sunday the Cliftonville again hosts a concert
with festival patron Ashley Hutchings as well
as the now well established Richard Davies
Memorial session of song and step dance.

The White Horse will host a full on programme

of singers, instrumentalists and bands to include
the folk-rock band Bounty Hounds on Saturday.
At the Kings Head on Saturday night & Sunday
afternoon the Cajun Dawgs and blues band
Split Whiskers will perform.
Richard Penguins Tea Time Showcase will
present a heady mix of styles at the Hotel De
Paris whilst at the Pavilion Theatre front of
house several pre-concert performances
have also been booked.
Further information and breaking news can be
found soon at www.folkonthepier.co.uk

Bristol, her songs are collages of found trinkets,

field recordings & surreal stories of the everyday,
where the urban beats of her cityscape
hypothesise with the forces of nature.
Live, she portals you into her sonic fantasy with
the aid of looped instruments and samples, and
hydrates you in a warm bath of vocal harmonies.
She has been compared to Hanne Huckleberg,
Tune-yards, Bjork, Tunng, Cosmo Sheldrake &
Coco Rosie and has been flavoured as a twinkly
dreamfolk-toytronica with jazz & world influences.

Julia Turner is a singer/songwriter who

draws from a large repertoire of original songs

and old but thrillingly fresh standards.
Julia studied jazz at Leeds College of Music
and then flew half way around the world to
explore her paternal homeland of Australia.
After romantic notions of being a waitress in
Melbourne fell flat she busked her way out of
a dead end job and started writing all about it.
She spins her stories through intricate vocal
melodies and deft finger picking guitar.
Back home in Bristol Julia continues to write &
perform both as a solo musician and with back
up from the many musicians she meets along
the way. She has a keen passion for vocal
harmony and spends much of her time
arranging for and directing large and
small vocal ensembles.
