Vocabulary Acquisition for Short Story: Holocaust Unit

ENGAGEMENT: Firstminutes Open discussion about the Holocaust. On the Smartboard
start a KWL about what students know about the
Holocaust and what they want to know. Students will come
up and write their thoughts. Second- Introduce the short
story about, Anne Frank: The diary of Anne Frank and the
vocabulary words students will be learning. Lastly- Show a
short video/tour (5 minutes) of the Annex Anne Frank and
her family lived in during the Holocaust.

The Lesson Structure:
EXPLORATION: Each student will be given a list of 10
vocabulary words that are used in the short story and the
requirements of the lesson. Students will create a 30second to 1-minute movie to depict a vocabulary word, its
meaning, and synonyms using the Ipads.

Students will look over the list of vocabulary words, make


their choice, and inform the teacher. There will be 2-3
students for each word. However, each student will make
his/her own movie.
ELABORATION: Students will begin by looking up his/her
word, locating definition, synonyms, and then creating
their movie to teach their word using words and pictures.
Students may add music and other effects as well to
enhance learning.
Students will continue working on his/her movie. Movies
are then complied into a class video to review the
vocabulary words before a short assessment.

Closing/Assessment
EVALUATION: Class video will be viewed while discussing
words, word meanings, and synonyms. Students will be
assessed by the completion of the project, the length of
the movie, the spelling and definition of the word, and
correct synonyms. As well, pictures and other

First, students will take the vocabulary assessment. This


will include matching word to definitions and synonyms,
and writing sentences using each vocabulary word in a
sentence.
Second, students will finish assessment with selfevaluation. Lastly, we will revisit the KWL adding what
students have learned.

Students will fill out a 3 point rubric about the process and his/her final product.
