Circle Geometry Unit Test

Instructions:
You will have 40 minutes to complete the exam. Read all instructions and questions carefully.
When you finish, look over your test to make sure you answered all the questions. Please remain
seated when youre done and I will collect all the booklets.
I have included a maze and Sudoku on the last page for fun.
Good Luck!

Stem A: Understands mathematical concepts and relationships

PART A: TRUE OR FALSE
Instructions:
Read each statement carefully. Determine if each statement is true or false by circling T for true
and F for false. Each question is worth 1 mark.
T

1. A central angle is always double the measure of an inscribed angle subtended

by a different arc.

2. A line that touches a circle at exactly one point is tangent to the circle.

3. A perpendicular bisector cuts a chord into thirds at 90 degrees.

4. Two inscribed angles are congruent if they are subtended (shared) by the same
arc.

5. A perpendicular bisector always includes the center of a circle.

6. Chord can be defined by a line segment joining two points on the

circumference of a circle.

Stem D: Develops mathematical procedures and strategies for computation

PART B: MULTIPLE CHOICE

Instructions:
Read each question carefully. Circle the letter with the BEST answer to the question. Each
question is worth 2 marks. Do NOT use protractors to measure the angles. The drawings are not
to scale.
7. The measure of

ACB is?

A) 90
B) 70
C) 35
D) 17.5

8. What is the measure of

A) 13.5
B) 26
C) 27
D) 53

TRO?

9. In this circle, the diameter DB=40cm and the chord LB=32cm. DG=10cm and
What is the length of the chord LK?

LGB=90.

A) 45.43cm
B) 27.71cm
C) 22.28cm
D) 13.56cm

10. In the semi-circle, C is on the diameter and is the midpoint of FG. What is the measure of the
angle HGI?
A) 44
B) 45
C) 22
D) 90

11. What is the length of the line CT?

A) 5.3 cm
B) 10.6 cm
C) 20.0 cm
D) 28.0 cm

Stem B: Uses Mathematical reasoning to analyze and solve problems

PART C: SHORT ANSWER
Instructions:
Read each question carefully and show all your work. Indicate your final answer in lowest
terms and by writing a concluding sentence. The number of marks awarded are indicated for
each question.
12. In the figure below, line QP is a tangent to the circle and has a length of 42cm. Line OQ runs
from the center of the circle to the end of the tangent and is 35 cm long. What is the diameter of
the circle? (3 marks)

13. Two concentric circles have their centers at point C. The radius of the smaller circle is 10 cm.
The length of the chord AB is 34 cm and is tangent to the smaller circle. What is the
circumference of the larger circle? (3 marks)

Stem E: Models, represents, and communicates math ideas

14. Draw 2 inscribed angles that are congruent inside this circle. Explain how you know they are
congruent? How could you determine the measure of a central angle without drawing the central
angle?

15. In 2013 High River, Alberta experienced mass flooding. The town has taken precaution and
built an anti-flood canal (its a perfect semi-circle shape with a diameter of 8 m) to move water
around the city. An inspector looks out from his office and notices the water level currently is a
6m horizontal width across the canal. Once the canal depth level reaches 3.5m the city must be
evacuated. How many more meters can the water level rise before people need to evacuate?
(Express your answer to the nearest hundredth of a meter.)
