1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
A major fantasy is the idea that everyone in the community will be onboard with the no kill mentality, where as in
reality, there are still people in government that support the catch and kill system because they want the easy
way out of dealing with stray animals that they consider to be pests.
2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
I received a communications degree at UofH and I have also taken classes on animal healthcare and public
relations.
3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
I mainly manage anything to do with advertising for more volunteers and dealing with the active volunteers that
regularly spend their time at the shelter.
4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?
Secure, I have been working with the shelter for a long time and I will continue to work with this organization
because I am very passionate about my duties and I have met so many people through the shelter that share the
same interests with me.
5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?
Around $30,000 to $50,000 (this is a very vague estimate)
6. What potential for growth is there in your field?
There is a lot of potential for growth because we are always looking to expand our range of influence on the
community, which means that we are always looking to create more jobs for the people in this career field. You
can go from being a volunteer or foster caretaker to being an active staff member at the shelter as a full-time job.
7. What do you believe is the most important aspect of this job?
Recruiting/informing as many people as possible to learn about how the shelter impacts the community. I have
had to look for a countless amount of ways to promote our service and to reach out to citizens for donations.
8. What is the hardest part of your job?
Revised Fall 2013

The hardest part of my job is finding committed people who are willing to serve the shelter and to put in a
significant amount of effort into being focused on making a difference for the animals.
9. How has the quality or impact of your career on the community progressed since you have started
working in this field?
There is a lot of growth and positive outcome in this field because we have been able to accomplish so many
things by solely running on peoples donations. Every time we figure out a new way to promote the shelter, we are
quick to take risks and try our best to seek new successes.
10. What is your favorite part of this job?
My favorite part of this job is the fact that I get to see how my work has directly impacted the community. It is
always nice to realize that another animals life is saved every time I put effort into whats important for the
shelter.
