Anticipatory Set
Today we will be practicing counting money with a fun
activity using Ms. Litzingers phone and iPad!
Procedures
Review the money slideshow.
Identify each coin and its worth.
Practice counting and adding up coins on each slide.
Explain to students they will now be practicing counting
their own money. Each student will be given a special
card. Each card has coins as well as a special scanner.
Students will count up the money and go show a
teacher their answer. The teacher will scan their card
using a phone or an iPad. If the student has the correct
answer they will be given a new card. If it is wrong, they
must go back and try again. When students have the
correct answer, they will draw it into their answer
boxes.
Model an example. I have a card with 3 dimes and 2
pennies. I know that dimes are 10 cents and pennies are
one cent. I know that 3 10s are 30 and 2 1s are 2.
30+2=32. I have 32 cents. Now Ill scan it to see if Im
right. Scan the card to show students you got it
correct. I got it correct! Now I will go to my worksheet

and draw 3 dimes and 2 pennies and write 32 cents

next to it so I know how much its worth. Now you try!
Send students back to their seats to try.
If theres extra time, have students work in partners to
solve the harder cards.
V.
Differentiation
Have students who may be struggling work with
partners to solve their money cards.
Provide advanced students with the money cards that
include quarters.
VI. Closure
To close the lesson, have students turn to a partner and share
some of the money cards they wrote down. Lets turn to a
partner and share some of the money cards you had. Cover
the answers and see if partners can solve the money cards.

Reflection on Planning
This lesson was a lot of fun to plan. I think the students will
love scanning the QR codes. Its something theyve never
done and I think it will bring excitement to the classroom.
Using these QR codes brings a different kind of atmosphere to
the classroom. I think the students will be more engaged and
more inclined to do their best work because theyll want to
see their cards scanned.
XI. Reflection on Instruction
This lesson was a lot of fun! Students loved being able to use
my phone. They did a great job counting money. Every time
they would get it wrong they go back and try again so they
could come back and get their card scanned. In previous
lessons, some students arent as engaged but everyone
wanted their cards scanned so all students were engaged.
This lesson was a success.
