ABSTRACT
TheinnovationwhichIproposetomakeisaroboticarm,muchliketheCanadiandesign,
thatservesthefunctionofassistingastronautsintheconstructionoftheISSStationbycatching
deliveriesthataresenttothestationandsecurelyholdingthepayloadinanareathatthe
astronautscangettoandworkwith.Thisarmwillbecontrolledremotelyandmostlikelyfrom
withinthestationwhileanotherastronautconductsanEVA.Theastronautcontrollingthearm
willuseacontroltomanipulatethemovementofthearm.Itwillhaveafullrangeofmotion
whereatthebendslikeanelbow,itwillbeabletorotate360degrees.Itwillalsobemadeoutof
materialsthataresafeforspace,andstrongenoughtocarryheavyobjects,butalsolightsothat
whentheytraveltheywillhaveahigherchanceofreachingtheatmosphere.Theastronautsusing
thistechnologywillbetrainedwithcomputersimulations,andsomehandsonsimulations.

FUNCTION
TherobotarmthatIammakingwillholdthepayloadthathasbeenpreviouslylaunched
intospace.Itwillalsobeabletodominorrepairsandlargerrepairswhenaspacewalkcannotbe
done.Thearmcanalsocarryastronautsinitfromonesideofthestationtoanotherquicklyif
neededtoreducethetimetheyspendontheirspacewalks.Muchlikethehumanarmandhands,
thisarmwillhelpintheirconstructionbycuttingdownspacewalkhours,speedingup
transportation,andalsohavingtoolsavailableonitforusebyastronautsorasarmextensions
andattachments.
CONTROL
Thefunctionalityofthearm,requiresthecontrolofanotherpersonwithinthestationto
controlwhereitmoves.Insidethestation,therewillbeanareathatcontrolsthemovement
throughajoystickremotethatisinside,andthatiswhatwillsimulatethemovementofthearm
atmultipleaxis.Ifapersoninsiderotatesthiscontroltothearmonthe(vertical)?axis,and
movesthecontrolstickup,thenthearmatthataxiswillbefacingupaswell.Thechangefrom
oneaxiswillbecontrolledbybuttons,thatwayitiseasierfortheastronautinsidetocontrolthe
arm,therewillalsobeaconfirmationforchangestoreduceanymistakesthecontrollermight
make.
INSTRUCTIONS
Themaincontrolfortheroboticarmwillhaveadesignatedareawithinthestationthatis
isolatedfromanythingsthatcouldbefloatingaroundandpotentiallyhitthecontrollerandmove
thearm.Theywillhavelabelledbuttonsthattheypressinordertoappointwhichportionofthe

armtheywillbecontrolling,Iftheyneedtograbsomethingtherewillalsobeamechanismthat
encasesthepayloadorevenanastronautoutside.Thecontrollerinsidewillalsouseahand
mechanismtograsptheobjectoutsidethestation.
TRAINING
AnyastronautwhogoestotheInternationalSpaceStationmustknowhowtocontrolthe
arm.Theywillhavemanysimulationsusingthecontrolstomovethearmwhilelookingata
screenthatshowsthepositioningofthearm.Theywillbegiventasksthataredifficultto
achieve,suchasdockingcargo,removingandinstallingcomponents,andopeningorclosingfuel
valves.Forhandsontrainingtheywilluseareplicaofthearmintheunderwatertrainingtoget
usedtothefeelofthemovementsinalowgravityscenario.
DESCRIPTION
Theroboticarmisdesignedtofunctionlikethehumanarm,itwillbehypermobileso
thatitismoreflexiblethanthehumanarmandithasawiderrangeofmotions.Itwillbemade
outofreinforcedcarbonfiberthermoplasticthismaterialislight,strong,anditcanhandle
extremetemperatures.Thenitwillbecoveredinprotectivefabricssimilartothoseusedin
satellitestoextenditslifespanandkeepitfunctioning.Itwillbeapproximately36inchesin
diameteranditcanextendtoafulllengthof70ftwith6differentaxes.
