Observation/Assessment: Why did you choose this activity/experience?

(Identify needs, interests, abilities of children)
I chose this activity because the children are at the age where they are starting to learn their shapes. With
the book and the children being able to identify the shapes as they paste them on their kites I hope they
recognize the different shapes in the future.

Vocabulary Words:
Circle
Square
Triangle
Diamond
Rectangle
MSDE Standards Developmental Goals:
1. Shows interest in concepts, such as matching and sorting according to color, shape
and size.
2. Demonstrate active listening skills.
3. Play cooperatively with other children.
Learning Objectives (2 or more):
1. The children will be able to place on their kites a little shape and big shape of the
same kind or sort the shapes by color.
2. The children will be able to retell what shape we are looking at in the book and on
our kite.
3. The children will create the kite using big and small cut-out shapes together at the
table.

Materials:
Construction paper cut out in shapes, big and small
Contact paper to make our classroom kite
Scissors
Apes Find Shapes by Jane Belk Moncure

Procedure:
I will cut out the shapes before the activity in two different sizes for each shape. I will
also cut out a kite (diamond shape) about two feet long out of contact paper. I will then
read the book Apes Find Shapes by Jane Belk Moncure. We will identify shapes in the
book as well as around our room. I will then have the children come to the table and help
me identify the different shapes and put different shapes on our classroom kite.

Extension Activity:
To extend this activity I may have finger-paint and paper for the children to make their
own shapes with their fingers.

1.

Introduction/Motivation/Set Induction: How will you get the childrens

attention?

I will get the childrens attention by reading the book Apes Find Shapes. While reading
the book I will encourage each student to identify a shape around the classroom that is
circular, or square.
2.

Nurturing/Teaching Strategies Procedures: What are the steps you will take to
conduct this activity/experience?

I will allow the children to play with the shapes and put them however they seem work. I
will use as less direction as possible, as this is their art but still try and talk to the children
about what shapes they have and are using.

3.

Closure: How will you know its time to end your activity?

I will end the activity with asking the children to help me hang the kite up in our window
where everyone can see it. We will tell the children that they can look out the window and
find some of these shapes outside.

4.

Transition: How will you prepare the children psychologically or physically for
what will occur next?
I will have the children help me hang up our kite, each holding a piece of it, one person
help with the tape, and then explain to them what we will do next.

5.

Developmental Variations: What modifications will you make for an

individual(s) or group(s)?
I will give the children that are working on their cutting skills a piece of paper that has
not been cut out so they can work on their fine-motor skills.
I will let the children that do not like paint on their fingers a paintbrush for our extended
activity.
