March 25th: PLG Numeracy

1. Malgosia went through some websites that made clear links to Numeracy in
each department that was present.
2. It was identified that in PE we actually use numeracy quite often in our
everyday teaching.

May 13th: PLG Numeracy
Present: A. Kumar, A. Weir, D. Devcich, W. Tepania, L. Prior, A. Rakete
Agenda: todays PLG was to help clarify after discussions within their departments
ways that they feel Numeracy is already being identified within their subject area
and ways in which numeracy could be incorporated more into lessons without
added to the work load.

NUMERACY AT SECONDARY SCHOOL

GENERAL points to consider
Numeracy is prerequisite for NCEA level 1 qualification.
Maths is compulsory at level 1 and optional for level 2 and 3 at HGHS.
Numeracy was not meant to be a class (ie: maths) but a collation of evidence
from other subjects.
The streaming of Mathematics at HGHS
MATN (AS) = multiple classes and levels > Students move to 1MATA the
following year
MATN1 (US) = 20 students > Students move to 1MATN the following year
1MATA = multiple classes and levels > Students move to 2MATA the following
year
2MATA/2MXT = Achievement standard courses
POSSIBLE Action plan for HGHS
There is no remedial action solution (ie: tracking sheets) to identify students short of
getting numeracy at level 1 throughout the year. Tutor group teachers can search
individually for now?
- Students > Details > Academic > NCEA > 7/10 = No numeracy
- Students > Details > Academic > Results > Num (identifies standards +
achievement)
'New' university entrance from 2014 > DOES CHANGE (almost every year)
University Entrance (UE) will continue to be the minimum requirement to go to a New
Zealand university. From 1 March 2014, to be awarded UE you will need:

NCEA Level 3
Three subjects - at Level 3, made up of:
o 14 credits each, in three approved subjects
Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above , made up of:
o 5 credits in reading

5 credits in writing
Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above
o

How do you get Level 1 Numeracy?

Numeracy requirement - Minimum of 10 credits through either:
1) Achievement standards - specified achievement standards available through a
range of subjects - (minimum total of 10 credits), or
- Martin has already assigned these to standards in Kamar. If they are not, students
will still get them.
- Students should also be made aware of this information ie: course information (Lit- Y,
Num-Y)
2) Unit standards - package of three numeracy unit standards (total of 10 credits - all
three required).
- Refer to Healthy Eating

June 17th: PLG Numeracy
Please find attached power point from our meeting. I will also do some more
detailed minutes with the feedback of how numeracy is already identified in
science, PE and technology.
For our next meeting, scheduled for week 2, term 3, I will endeavour to get a
moodle page up and upload our mission statement and definition. I will also
bring a description of the maths strands. If you all could please bring a copy of
your curriculum area strands too so we can link these with the maths ones and
get that up on the moodle page too.
And some food to share.

September 16th: PLG
I have a Moodle page up for numeracy that I will upload our mission statement
and definition on to. I will also bring a description of the maths strands. If you
all could please bring a copy of your curriculum area strands too so we can start
linking these with the maths ones and get that up on the moodle page too.
