Science Lesson Plan:
Forest Habitat
SOL: 3.6 The student will investigate and understand that ecosystems
support a diversity of plants and animals that share limited resources. Key
concepts include
a) aquatic ecosystems;
b) terrestrial ecosystems;
c) populations and communities; and
d) the human role in conserving limited resources.
Objective: The students will investigate and describe plants and animals
that live in the forest ecosystem.
Materials:
Science notebook
PowerPoint with pictures of the forest habitat
Exit ticket
Pencil
Before:
Instruct students to take out their science notebook and turn to a new
page. They will create a T-chart with the titles, Plants and Animals
on each side.
Inform that class that they will be travelling outside to look at the
environment around them. As they are observing wildlife, they should
be taking notes in their science notebook of things that they see.
The class will go outside to the playground and surrounding areas
(within a certain limit) and record observations of the environment
around them. Allow students to go looks at trees, plants, birds, insects,
or other animals.
They will take notes of different plants, animals, and behaviors that
they see by filling information in their T-chart.
When students have most of their page filled with notes, take them
back to the classroom for the remainder of the lesson.
During:
Once students are back in the classroom, they will share their findings
with others in the class. They will talk about what they saw with
students at their table. Then share with the whole group.

Introduce the forest habitat by discussing the area we live in. Talk
about the plants and animals they saw outside. Explain that what they
saw is because they live in the forest ecosystem.
Begin to show a PowerPoint on the forest. Show pictures of the forest
habitat and explain that a forest is a dry-land ecosystem because it is
not covered with water. Allow the class to talk about the things they
see in the pictures with a partner.
Continue to show pictures of the forest, including plants, trees, and
animals that live in the forest.
Discuss with the class things that they see in the pictures that they
also see around where they live. Compare and contrast the
plants/animals they see in the pictures with the things they saw
outside.

After:
Pass out the exit ticket worksheet. Students will complete the
worksheet individually to demonstrate their knowledge of the forest
habitat and the plants and animal that live there, as well as writing the
name of the ecosystem they live in (assessment).
