Lesson one Day one

Daily topic: Math lesson on graphing precipitation

Objectives: - The students will accurately graph the rain from Baton Rouge weather data (weather.com).
Common Core: 5.G.A.1
Procedures:

The teacher will discuss what a rain gauge is with her class. After explaining, she will tell
the students they will be creating and interpreting a graph.
The teacher will display the labeled graph on the board (using Microsoft Excel) and allow
the students to read each part of the graph.
Once the students understand each part, the students will research the weather data from the
previous month and create a graph of the precipitation.
The students will complete a graph on Microsoft Excel after researching the rain data on
weather.com.

The students will need computer access.

How do you accommodate students with :
Students with special needs will receive special seating and repeated instructions, non-native students will
choose their native language on the computer, and gifted students will complete an extra graph on
temperature data for the previous month.
Daily evaluation should be related to the lesson taught that day Use a Rubric: see next page

Labeling of Y axis

The Y axis has a clear,

neat label that describes
the units and the
dependent variable (e.g,
% of dogfood eaten;
degree of satisfaction).

units and the dependent
variable (e.g, % of

of satisfaction).

Labeling of X axis

The X axis has a clear,

neat label that describes
the units used for the
independent variable
(e.g, days, months,
participants\' names).

used to make the graph
more readable. A ruler

Units

All units are described

(in a key or with labels)
and are appropriately
sized for the data set.

Most units are

appropriately sized for
the data set.

All units are described

appropriately sized for
the data set.

Points are not plotted

correctly OR extra
points were included.

Units are neither

described NOR
appropriately sized for
the data set.
