At SXSWedu in Austin, Texas, this month, there was little talk among conference
speakers of getting students connected at home, though it came up occasionally in
question-and-answer sessions.
It seems like all of the sessions arent geared toward [home connectivity], but
whenever theres an opportunity for Q&A, everyone wants to ask about it, said Zak
Malamed of the advocacy group Student Voice, who was among the thousands who
flocked to Austin.

Student rights is not just a list of things that a student should be able to do. Student
rights is a mindset that empowers students to take control of their own learning,
education, and lives This past week marked a historical point in the history of
student rights this year was the first time that there were a significant amount of
students taking part in the conversations happening at SXSWedu.

education conference, most people don't normally expect there to be students in
attendance.
Despite the fact that the purpose of education is theoretically for the betterment of the
students, they are often absent at these conferences and other conversations about
education that affect them the most. This year, the nonprofit Student Voice aimed to
change that with the first ever student-led education summit at SXSWedu, called The
State and Future of Student Rights...

Daniel Kao, a 20-year-old Cupertino native who studies at UC San Diego, said many of
his professors simply post course readings online as PDFs. He likes digital textbooks
better than traditional ones.
I've gone mostly paperless with my life, so its just a lot easier for me to kind of
manage different things, especially in a field like computer science where a lot of it is
done a lot of your work is done on a computer, Kao said.
