Were seeing more and more mass shootings taking place across the country. The debate
on gun violence has taken place for many years now. There are many ideas as to how to fix this
issue. Including ideas outside of the tradition gun ban idea. The issue is at hand Americans are
scared and action needs to be taken. However nobody is quite sure what to do. I chose this topic
because its something that is very relevant and it cant be ignored. It has issues that tie into the
foundation of the country. Issue that may be hindering the progress of the decision making
process.
Australia Gun Facts, Figures and the Law. Gunpolicy.org, United Nations Office for
Disarmament Affairs, n.d. Web. 14 Apr. 2015.
SUMMARY. This website talks about gun statistics pertaining to countries all over the
world. I looked at the gun statistics from Australia. More particularly I looked at the total number
of gun deaths. It lists this by year starting in 1979 to 2012. It also provide much more
information pertaining to firearm statistics.
INITIAL EVALUATION. The website is a government funded website. Its not a website
looking to make money only inform the public of the reality. I found the information to be
credible given the fact that its government funded.

ININITIAL THOUGHTS. This information will be helpful to show the reality of gun
violence not only in Australia but to compare it to the US as well. It will help me to educate my
reader more on the topic of gun violence.
Helling, Alex. "This House would as the United States ban assault weapons." idebate.org.
International debate education association, 17 Dec. 2012. Web. 13 Apr 2015.
SUMMARY. This article talks about a mass shooting that took place in Newtown,
Connecticut. Dianne Feinstein talked about how she was going to introduce a bill proposing a
gun ban. The article then refers to the 1994-2004 gun ban. It goes into detail as to what that ban
consisted of. Which was a ban on certain semiautomatic and fully automatic assault rifles. Rifles
which included military style features such as flash suppressors and threaded barrels to
accommodate silencers. This ban also included large capacity magazines (LCM). The article
state that this ban was farther reaching than the assault weapons (AW) ban because there are
many not banned AWs that take LCMs. They mentioned that many LCMs were 30 rounds or
more of ammunition.
INITIAL EVALUATION. I thought this was a good article because it helped to inform of
whats already been tried as far a weapons bans and what that ban entailed. I liked how much
detail it went into regarding the weapons ban. Dianne Feinstein is a United States Senator (DCA) shes well versed in this issue currently as well as the history. The knowledge that she has
helps us to understand the issue in its entirety to make the best possible decision.
INITIAL THOUGHTS. I feel like I could use this to help support the idea that a firearms
ban should be put into place. It shows that its been down before and it shows that conditions of
that ban.

Lurie, Julia. What Kills More Americans: Guns or Cars? Mother Jones. Mother Jones NonProfit Organization, 18 Dec. 2014. Web. 6 Apr. 2015.
SUMMARY. This article takes information from a study conducted by Garen Wintemute
a University of California-Davis doctor and researcher. The article asks eight questions that deal
with gun violence. It takes about homicides and suicides. It takes a look at the different
demographics and how they are involved. The article presents the information in easy to read
graphs that add a really nice perspective to the topic.
INITIAL EVALUATION. I like the article its straight forward and easy to read. I liked
the Q&A format and all the questions presented are very relevant I believe they are questions
many people have asked before. The presentation of the information is very clear and easy to see
and read. Garen Wintemute a University of California-Davis professor gathered this information
from the Centers of Disease Control. As a professor hes often involved with research and hes
dedicated much time and attention to obtain the most accurate information.
INITIAL THOUGHTS. I think the best way for me to use this information would be to
help educate my reader in the topic and whats actually going on out in the world. I think it
would best we used in the beginning of my essay to help form a base line of knowledge.

Martelle, Scott. You say gun control doesnt work? Fine. Lets ban guns altogether. Los
Angeles Times. Los Angeles Times, 28 May. 2014. Web. 6 Apr. 2015.

McCloy 4
SUMMARY. This article makes it clear that a gun ban should be put into place. It starts
by talking about some of the mass shootings that have taken place. He states that a gun ban
should be implemented with some room for hunters. But outside of shotguns and hunting rifles
there should be a ban on everything else. That guns should be registered and sales done outside
of a dealer should be tracked as well. I thought of it as something like what we do with cars. He
talked about how the data of the use of handguns in self-defense is very limited and doesnt help
to draw a clear conclusion. He argues that guns are used by angry men, mentally ill people.
Suicidal people and children. He also touches on the argument of the 2nd amendment. He feels
that some compromises should be made on the side of the gun rights activists. He concludes in
stating that he personally believe a gun ban should be put into place.
INITIAL EVALUATION. At first I found it pretty direct but I think the author made fair
points. Obviously the issue is much deeper than that. I could tell the author had done his
research. I liked how he focused on variations points of the issue and didnt just rant about one
point.
INITIAL THOUGHTS. I think it will be a good article to use to help promote the idea of
a gun ban. It has a lot of information to draw on and it discusses multiple points of the issue on
how to solve gun violence.

Moyer Christine S. Public health approach: Physicians aim to prevent gun violence. American
Medial News. American Medical News, 10 Sept. 2012. Web. 6 Apr. 2015.
SUMMARY. The article talks about how gun violence should either be switched or
supplemented by being considered a public health issue and not just a criminal justice issue. The

McCloy 5
article mentions some doctors and their thoughts on not only treating gun violence victims but
doing what they can to prevent gun violence. The article continues to explain that if a switch is
made and the issue is treated as a public health issue the ability to study the issue will then be a
reality. Currently there are restriction that dont allow the study of gun violence as well as there
just isnt the funding. It makes it clear that research such as this has been effective in the past.
Dealing with automobile accidents as well as drug and tobacco use. Those studies have expanded
our understanding of those issue and led to seat belts and airbags that lower the risk of accidents.
The article makes the point that this same thing should happen with gun violence so decision can
be backed by real data.
INITIAL EVALUATION. I think the article makes a very valid point. I believe its a step
that all can support regardless of a gun ban. If the idea the article poses is implemented our
knowledge of the issue will only increase allowing for a better decision to be made. It shows the
concern of medical professionals and the scientifical side they would like to take to help support
this issue that seems to be so personal for America.
INITIAL THOUGHTS. This will help my paper to show that maybe there are some other
steps in fighting gun violence that just an assault weapons ban or a high capacity magazine ban.
Munro, Neil. Obama Suggests US Needs Ban on Semiautomatic, Automatic Weapons. The
Daily Caller. The Daily Caller, 10 June. 2014 Web. 31 Mar. 2015.
SUMMARY. The article is dealing with shooting spree concerns. President Obama has
suggested that we follow Australias example on gun bans. This includes strict bans on all
semiautomatic and automatic weapons. President Obama made a state concerning the second
amendment. He said that they can respect it and hunters and enthusiasts can have their guns. He

McCloy 6
also continued to say that the country needs some rules in place for use of common sense when it
comes to firearms. He stated that he is most upset with the fact that our society isnt taking
necessary steps to keep firearms out of the hands of those that will do harm to others. He
continued by talking about how we are the only developed country with problems like this. The
point was brought up about the mental health of Americans. President Obama quickly dismissed
it stating that we are not the only nation with crazy people. He finished by stating If public
opinion does not demand a change in congress, it will not change.
INITIAL EVALUATION. I think the article was interesting. It doesnt really give any
specific solutions to the problem aside from suggesting we do exactly what Australia did and ban
those weapons. President Obama talks about allowing hunters and others to continue to have
guns but wants to ban other types of guns. I dont see how this would fix the problem. Criminals
can use whatever type of gun they can get.
INITIAL THOUGHTS. I think this article would be a good demonstration of what the
Obama administration thinks on the subject. It will show very well how President Obama
personally feels on the subject and his dedication to fixing it.

Shueh, Jason. Using data to combat gun violence. Emergency Management. Emergency
Management Magazine, 03 October. 2014. Web. 31 Mar. 2015.
SUMMARY. It starts off by mentioning statistics on gun violence. Then it asks questions
like, what are the reasons? It is the environments? Is it personal responsibility? What causes this
type of cultural behavior? It goes on to emphasize how data and new technologies might help in
the ever going war on gun violence. Andy Papchristos states that gun violence in concentrated in

McCloy 7
certain pockets of major cities all over the country. These pockets are prone to an impoverished
life style. David Chipman commented on using city wide acoustic sensors to create a gunshot
detection and police dispatch system. Mitch Landrieu talked about the difference in victims and
how the majority of them are African-American men. Jamira Burley talked about how the
difficulty in sharing data amongst the agencies has caused issues.
INITIAL EVALUATION. I think the article brings into perspective a whole new realm in
the gun control argument. Most people are taking about banning guns or not banning guns. I
liked the article because it brings in another idea. The idea that maybe its deeper than just the
weapon. All the information for the article is brought in from experts or companies completely
dedicated to the issue. Most of which dedicated much time and resources to diligently look for a
solution to the issue at hand.
INITIAL THOUGHTS. I think the best way for me to use this is to help show that there
may be other options in combating gun violence. As of now the argument is whether there should
be a firearm ban or not. However this does provide more insight as to possible causes.

Simone, Ginny. ATFs Ammo Ban: A Test Case. Ginny Simone Reporting. NRA News, 26
March. 2015. Web. 31 Mar. 2015.
SUMMARY. This is a video report put up on the NRA News site. Its talking about the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tabaco, and Firearms (ATF) attempt to put a ban on M855 Rifle ammo. They
talk about how its a test case to see what they can do. Michael Zarlenga of the Law Firm of
Arsenal Attorneys talks about how the Obama administration is attempting to label this ammo as
armor piercing. He goes through the definition of an armor piercing round and explains how this

McCloy 8
ammo doesnt meet that definition. It talks about how president Obama hasnt had any success in
congress in getting legislation passed for a gun ban so hes trying this instead. They go on to talk
about how President Obama is trying to make this as issue of security for police officers. They
state that this type of round or the common firearm used, the AR-15, is not a common place
firearm that police deal with. Zarlenga continues to make the argument that this type of ammo is
not only a popular sporting rifle ammo but it is also a choice ammo for the Military and local law
enforcement. He states by banning this ammo its going to decrease the production of it and it
will be extremely hard to find. Causing problems for the Military and local law enforcement. He
also talks about how he cant believe the government isnt concerned about any of those types on
consequences they just want to ban the ammo.
INITIAL EVALUATION. I thought this article brought up many good points on the issue
of controlling gun violence. It shows how the government is making attempts at controlling the
issue however it shows that this attempt will not do much for the cause. It brings in many good
points about the ammunition and its uses. I also liked how they talked about the possible effects
of the M855 ammo being ban and how it would cause problems for the military and local law
enforcement.
INITIAL THOUGHTS. I think I can use this video to help show that in many cases
banning firearms or ammunition will not result in much. It will also serve to show that the
government isnt sure what to do and they are just trying things even though they wont be very
productive. Itll show how the government isnt looking for a long term solution but just a quick
fix. Itll also help to explain how a gun ban just wont be as effective as some may think.

Vance, Laurence M. The irrelevance of the second amendment. The Futrure of Freedom
Foundation. The Future of Freedom Foundation, 9 Mar. 2011. Web. 13 Apr. 2015.
SUMMARY. The article addresses an important issue of the gun control topic. It talks
about the second amendment and important Supreme Court cases that helped set precedent in
this matter. It talks a little bit about how those who use weapons for an illegal act wont care
much about the other laws and regulations. The article continues on to talk about some important
court cases such as District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) and McDonald v. City of Chicago
(2010) and the decision that came from them. It talks about the federal governments right to
make gun legislation and how the constitution doesnt grate this right. The second amendment
doesnt grant any rights it only recognized natural rights we have as humans. He also explains
that regardless of the second amendment the Federal Government is not granted power by the
constitution to institute these laws. It ends y stating that the Government has gotten around this
and that if it continues like this a gun control laws are established than the government will go
further and get around other things.
INITIAL EVALUATION. This was a very interesting article that got me thinking. It
really doesnt focus so much on whether a gun ban should or should not be implemented. It
focuses more on whether or not the government has the power to regulate gun use or not. It
involved the constitution which is the base of our country and its whats held our country
together for so long. I liked how it involved the constitution and talked about how in many cases
it gets kind of ignored or the government finds small ways to get around things to get what they
want. I thought it was very interesting that the states that regardless of the second amendment the
right to bare arms is a natural right and is not given a right given by the second amendment.
Vance the author of the article has been involved with article and books of this nature. Hes a

McCloy 10
journalist and blogger for multiple sites. He also help create policy for the Future of Freedom
Foundation. Hes been very much involved in the issue.
INITIAL THOUGHTS. I think this article will serve me in stating that gun control laws
cant be implemented because there is a lack of power to do so. It will help to show that this right
is a natural right that did and will exist regardless of the second amendment. It will also help to
shed light on why the second amendment was written.
