UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

TLW develop an awareness of other peoples world view, of their unique way of life, and of the patterns
of behavior which order their world, as well as to learn about contributions other cultures have in North
America.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Give an example and with guided help, TLW know age-appropriate cultural traditions and a form of art
that exist in the target culture with 100% accuracy.

Given a worksheet with , TLW draw a picture and answer 4 questions, What is your favorite
thing about Chinese culture, Name one thing that Chinese culture shares with us in America? Name one
thing that is different in Chinese culture than American culture and why do you think it is different?
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
2.1 Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the
culture studied.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:


The key concept of this lesson if for students to learn about another culture here in North America.
Origami, Chinese Lion Dance, Chopsticks, Fortune Cookie
This lesson connect with the previous standard 1.3 Present information, concepts, and ideas to
an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics and connects with the next standard 2.2
Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture
studied.

I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for
those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this
particular lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:


Introduction:
TTW write 4 questions on the whiteboard, such as how does the music sound? How are they
dressed? What are they doing in the video and what is it called? TTW will inform students that we are
learning about other cultures in North America. TTW introduce a video on a 2nd grade Chinese Lion

Procedures:
TTW ask the students the questions written on the board to check for understanding.
TTW pass around chopsticks and give the students information and history on chopsticks.
TTW inform the students that we will make a form of Chinese art that is called Origami. We
are going to make a whale out of paper.
TTW pass out a square piece of paper and will show a video on how to make a paper whale.

TTW will model each step for the class and TLW mimic.
1. Step One: Lay your paper like a diamond
2. Step Two: Fold your paper in half from one corner to the other.
3. Step Three: Fold the left and right sides of paper to the crease. It should have a kite
shape.
4. Step Four: Fold the top tip of the paper to the middle.
5. Step Five: Fold the paper in half
6. Step Six: Fold the tail up.
7. Step Seven: Draw eyes, fins, and any other patterns you like, and enjoy your whale.
Closure: ) TTW pass out a fortune cookie and describe its significance in American and Chinese culture. (Ex:
Fourtune cookies are only apart of Chinese that live in America. If you go to China you will not find fourtune
cookies there.) TTW pass out the handout and TLW draw a picture of their favorite Chinese artifact and answer
the following questions What is your favorite thing about Chinese culture, Name one thing that Chinese culture
shares with us in America? Name one thing that is different in Chinese culture than American culture and why do
you think it is different? The picture must have the drawing and writing stating what it is.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
The formative assessment for this lesson occurs after the video of the Lion Dance when the TTW ask question
and the Summative Assessment occurs when the students draw a picture and

MODIFICATIONS:
I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those
ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular
lesson.
