Essential Question

Why is it important to protect our earth, resources, and

health?

difference between renewable and non-renewable
resources? What are some actions that exemplify reducing,
reusing, and recycling? What kinds of pollution exist? What
are some negative impacts pollution has on the human
body?

Unit Summary

This unit will focus on the environment and the relationship humans maintain with the world
around us. Intended for grades 4-6, this unit will cover English, Science, and Health
concepts. During the English lesson, students will learn about water conservation and take a
critical look at the amount of water they use. In the science lesson, students will learn about
the different types of resources humans use and how to protect those resources by practicing
the three rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle). The health lesson will emphasize the role the
environment and pollution play in the health of human beings. These lessons within the unit
will enable the students to explore the answers to the essential and unit questions in depth,
process their findings, and then interpret the information for others.

Procedures

Day One
Lesson One: Water Conservation

Students will log their water usage, create a blog, and then post reflections about their
water usage and conservation efforts.
Day Two through Six
Lesson Two: Resource Conservation and the Three Rs

Students will work in groups to explore various areas of resource conservation. They
will then collaborate with their group members to script, film, edit, and present a
persuasive news segment on resource conservation and the importance of reducing,
reusing, and recycling.
Day Seven:
Lesson Three: Pollution and Your Health

Students will learn about pollution and the impacts it has on humans health. They will
research additional information about pollution and health in order to create a Prezi
presentation on their findings.

Non-Native English
Speaker

Use Sceencast-O-Matic as their tool for blogging.

Instead of writing about their journaling, they will
instead talk into the microphone about their
observations at home.
Students will be allotted additional time to research
their topic, if necessary. Students may also be paired
with another student in the class to gather their
information together.
Students with special needs will be assigned peer
tutors to ensure they gain understanding of the
material.
For non-native students, I will use Google Translate
both to provide instruction and to receive/grade their
blogs.
Students will be allotted additional time to research
their topic, if necessary. Additionally, students may
use Google translate to aid them in gathering and

Gifted Student

For gifted students, I will require a submission to Mrs.

Tates Class Newspaper. This will require them to act
as a journalist, providing a column written about their
blogging experience.
Students will create a brochure on Publisher with the
information collected by their group for their video.
The purpose of this brochure is to educate members of
the community on the importance of conserving
resources by reducing, reusing, and recycling.
If there are no students with special needs, gifted
students will be asked to lead the discussions in their
groups.

Student Assessment

Lesson One: Students blog posts will be evaluated.

Lesson Two: Students will be evaluated on their individual and group work on the research
and video project.
Lesson Three: Students will be evaluated on their research and presentations.
