Philosophy of Education
Throughout my career in education, I have taught and worked at several
administrative positions in a school. It is hard for me to decide what I like more being
a teacher or an administrator. However, in all my roles, my educational philosophy is
based on one simple statement which is: all students can learn, achieve and flourish.
This statement guides my decisions, plans, actions and judgements.
All students can learn when the school environment is safe and welcoming which
can be accomplished if the school has a, clear structure, defined rules, policies and
expectations that are well communicated to all stakeholders (students, administrators,
teachers, staff and parents). I believe in open communication. In my current position as
a school administrator, I do my best to ensure that all voices are heard, respected and
valued. This honesty in communication makes all stakeholders feel safe and supported.
It is important for me as an administrator to communicate daily with my students and
staff and to acknowledge their concerns. Students and staff want to be treated fairly.
Whether an administrator or a teacher, I believe that being firm, fair and consistent helps
in creating a safe environment. Hence, a better learning environment.
In terms of teaching and learning, I believe that students should be active
participants in the learning process. Therefore, as educators we much provide learning
opportunities which are student centered and include activities that engage current
students and future generation of learners. As we prepare students for life-long learning,
we must also provide a rigorous and relevant curriculum to create enthusiasm for
learning. Moreover, social skills, for me, are as important as academic achievement.
The school should promote diversity, encourage creativity, provide student leadership
opportunities, and develop communication skills and self-confidence.
These simple beliefs, assumptions and values determine the goals that the school
should set. They also should guide decisions on matters regarding how the school is
organized, how we interact with students, how to involve stakeholders (staff, parents,
community members and students), how students and teachers interact within the
school, how accountability is measured and how resources are distributed.

Finally, every student has the potential to be successful. Teachers and school
administrators should always send a clear message to every student: We care about you
and your success. If students succeed, eventually the teachers succeed and the school
prosper.
