What is Independent Study

Mentorship (ISM)?
ISM is an acronym standing
for Independent Study
Mentorship. This course is a
project-based learning
experience designed for
students with interest at
the professional level. The
project provides
opportunities for an in
depth study in a particular
curricular area of interest.

Some course requirements include:

Document 2-3 hours pf mentorship
activity per week
Submit weekly journal logs
documenting mentorship
experiences
Complete ISM online portfolio
Present a midterm and final
presentation
Develop a tangible product and
presentation at the collegiate level

Mrs. Mariam got her associates degree and bachelors degree for
Political Science at the University of Houston- Main Campus. She
is an Intern at the Harris County District Courts, a USC
Ambassador at The University of Houston, and of course a
Mathematics Tutor at San Jacinto College

Why I chose Tutoring

I wanted to explore a new area of education.

Through this mentorship I hope to learn
about the different techniques used to tutor.
I believe this will be very beneficial because,
not only am I interested in this career area,
but I believe it will also teach me ways to
studying.

Tips and Tricks when Tutoring

Be prepared
You dont want your students to
think you're unprepared!

Make the Student Do the Work

Ask them to explain the problem
to you, this way you know that
they are actually learning.

Give lots of praise

When students do well, tell them.

Set a practice assignment until

your next session
This will solidify what they have
just learned.

7 Ways of Learning
Visual: These people prefer to use pictures, images, diagrams, colors, and mind
maps.
Physical: These are the learn by doing people that use their body to assist in
their learning. Drawing diagrams, using physical objects, or role playing are all
strategies of the Physical learner.
Aural: People who prefer using sound , rhythms, music, recordings, clever
rhymes, and so on.
Verbal: The verbal learner is someone who prefers using words, both in speech
and in writing to assist in their learning. They make the most of word based
techniques, scripting, and reading content aloud.
Logical: The people who prefer using logic, reasoning, and systems to explain or
understand concepts. They aim to understand the reasons behind the learning,
and have a good ability to understand the bigger picture.
Social: These people are the ones who enjoy learning in groups or with other
people, and aim to work with others as much as possible.
Solitary: The solitary learner prefers to learn alone and through self-study .

How to Reach a Solution

1. Read the Problem
2. Evaluate key terms which indicate
operation
3. Translate English words into mathematical
words
4. Solve
5. Simplify
6. Check work

mathematical problem.
I chose this because I believe it is the most helpful thing
to use when approaching a question. I also believe it is
the best way to showcase what I have learned through
out the semester.

Conclusion
I thoroughly enjoyed this mentorship and study because
not only is it beneficial information to know, but it
greatly applies to my focused area of study.

In conclusion, with the use of this flow chart, tutoring
can become systematic and the solution can be easily
accessible by following the flow of the chart and not
skipping steps.
