Are Genders Equal on Broadway?
"Disney THE LION KING | Official Site for the Broadway Musical | Cast &
Creative Team." Disney THE LION KING | Official Site for the
Broadway Musical | Cast & Creative Team. Web. 20 Mar. 2015.
I plan on using specifically the cast and crew page of The Lion
Kings website because it will give me an insight on how each gender is
represented within the actors and actresses. It will allow me to
understand if one of the more popular Broadway musicals are based
more on their female actresses or male actors. I think this is a valuable
source of research because it gives me information on whether this
popular musicals is more male based or female based.

Hodge, Jarrah. "A Feminist Guide to Broadway Musicals." Gender Focus

A Feminist Guide to Broadway Musicals Comments. N.p., 12 Nov.
2010. Web. 22 Mar. 2015.
This article got me thinking about feminine heroin characters in
musicals.
For example, Jarrah Hodge specifically lists one of the musicals as The
Sound of Music, which at its time, she states, was incredibly feminist
because the main character is a strong woman. Another musical Jarrah

Hodge lists is called The Color Purple. This article has intrigued me to
look further into that musical, because rather than just having mainly
females in the production, its main purpose is to tell the story of a
young woman endures years of suffering but eventually finds her
voice. This article helps me because it gives me a starting point to
find other musicals to research to find more information on feminism in
Broadway productions.

This is a fantastic article. What Id like to focus on is a paragraph
within this article that talks about male and female playwrights. It
states that there was a study tested to see whether male or female
playwrights were more popular among show directors. What they
found was that, even though they were written exactly the same, if a
script had a mans name on it, it was more likely to be chosen by the
director. This is a perfect example of sexism within the theatre. This is
a great article because it shows with facts, that sexism is happening in
theatre right now.

Rusie, Robert. "Talkin' Broadway - Broadway 101." Talkin' Broadway Broadway 101. N.p., n.d. Web. 16 Mar. 2015.
There is a page on this article that is specifically about the
beginning of Broadway itself and that is what I will research. I plan on
using this page to explain how Broadway began and the first plays that
were performed on Broadway. This is important to the research
because it will give myself and the reader the necessary knowledge of
Broadway in order to expand on gender equality at the beginning of
Broadway and now. The information that I will use is mainly the history
of Broadway from 1810 to the early 1900s. I believe this information is
relevant enough to include in my research.

Vraketta, Georgia. "The Representations of Gender, Sexuality and Race

in Disney's The Lion King." The Representations of Gender,
Sexuality and Race in Disney's The Lion King. University of
Brighton, n.d. Web. 16 Mar. 2015.
There is a section in this article about The Lion King that is about
masculinity and feminism in The Lion King. The information from this
excerpt is mainly what Ill use from this article. This part talks about
how most of the main characters in The Lion King are males, while the
secondary characters are mainly females. The great part of this article
is that it gives an opposite opinion than that of Jarrah Hodges. I
believe the information will be useful because it gives an example of a

musical that made up of mostly male characters and gives a masculine

perspective rather than a feminist perspective.

Wolf, Stacy Ellen. Changed for Good: A Feminist History of the

Broadway Musical. New York: Oxford UP, 2010. Print. 23 Mar.
2015.
This is a book that I discovered on the UCF Library onesearch
page. Online is only a short piece of the book, but I will go into the
library and rent it out when I begin more in depth research. In the
online summary, it mentions a popular musical from the 1950s, West
Side Story. Reading about West Side Story has intrigued me to look
more into the social roles of the characters in it. The article mentions
that it is separate groups of same sex friends. This means that this
production showcases some sort of sexual segregation. When I retrieve
this book, I will look more into the section of West Side Story. I believe
this will help give us a perspective on how genders are represented in
the characters of each performance.
