18millionfollowers.Thismeansthatonaverageonetothreetimesaday,eighteenmillion
peoplearenotifiedoftheactionsandthoughtsofthetheband.Evenifonlyonepercentofthose
followerspayattentiontothosetweets,180,000peoplehavebeeninteractedwith.Depending
onthestrengthandveracityofafansloveforOneDirection,thetweetwilleitherbedismissed,
ortakenintoseriousaccount.Thepurposeofmyresearchistofindouthowandtowhatextent
canfansobsessionsorinterestsaffecttheareasofatheirlife?Answeringthisquestionwilllend
understandingtomanypeopleouttherewhoknowsomeonethathaveobsessionsthatare
sometimesendearingandsometimesconcerninganddiscoverifthereisalineharmlesshobbyor
detrimentalobsession.
ThesourcesIwillbeusinghaveallbeenpublishedrecently,makingsurethattheyare

usefulinmypaperbecauseitgivesareallifeandpersonalinsighttowhatanunhealthy
obsessionmightlooklike.Thisthreadispostedonamentalhealthcentricforum,sothereis
possibilitythatthispersonmighthaveothercontributingfactorstoherobsession,butwiththe
numberofresponsesthatsaythattheyknowsomeonewiththesameproblemorarehavingthe

processinvolvesalevelofcriticalliteracyfromfanfictionauthors,astheydonotpassively
consumematerialandtexts,butquestionthecharacterandplotdecisionsmade.Theauthorstates
thatfanfictionisnotsomethingtobedismissed,andwarrantstobetakenseriouslybecauseof

verylargevarietyoffandoms,fromsoapoperastoTheGratefulDead,explainingadynamicand
hierarchysimilartotheoneexplainedinBussesarticleabove.However,thisarticlesinterviews
spendsmoreattentiontothefandomsocietiesintheninetiesthanthecurrentdecades.Because
ofthis,theaccuracyandrelevanceoftheinformationthearticleprovidescouldbecalledinto
