Lesson Plan (Direct Instruction)

Subject/Grade: 10th Grade IGCSE Geometry

Instructional Input

Teacher: Miguel Larios

Date: 4/10/2015
Standard:
HS. G SRT. A. 2. Given two figures, explain the meaning of similarity for triangles as the
equality of all corresponding pairs of angles and the proportionality of all corresponding pairs of
sides.
Mathematical Practices Look and make use of structure.
Objective (Explicit):
SWBAT solve for areas and side length of similar shapes by writing a proportion.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):
TSW solve for the area of a shape.
TSW solve for the side length of a shape.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable, include variety of methods of checking for understanding):
Students can correctly answer 80% of the questions their given during the lesson.
Students can correctly answer 80% of the questions from the worksheet given at the end of the
class by correctly showing their work and the correct answer.
Key vocabulary:
Materials:
Proportion: Two rations equal to each other.
Whiteboard, markers, notebooks, worksheets,
Similar: Same shape, different size.
warm-up sheet, calculators, and Power Point
Area: Surface area of a shape.
presentation.
Opening/Anticipatory Set: (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life)
At the beginning of class the students will be given their notes and the students will answer the warmup questions. These questions are from the previous lesson. The warm-up questions will also be
presented in the Power Point Presentation.
Teacher Will:

terms of the objective of the lesson.
Then introduce the concept of setting up a
proportion when trying to solve the area of a
shape given the side lengths. (3~5 minutes)

The students will take notes and ask

questions if necessary.

Go over some examples where we are given

side lengths of similar shapes and we are trying
to solve the area of one of the given shapes.
(5~6 minutes)

The students will take notes and ask

questions if necessary.

Differentiation
Daniel and Blake will be given the PowerPoint presentation slides for their notes Different
examples will be presented during the presentation where different object are going to be
translated using different methods based sequenced form basic to complex.

Guided Practice
Independent Practice

Teacher Will:
Go over some examples and ask the students
what steps are required when trying to solve for
the value of the area or the side length of the
given shapes and how to set up the proportion.
(8~10 minutes)

Student Will:
Guide the teacher in correctly setting up the
proportion and solving for the area or the side
length of the shape.

Present questions for the students to answer on Answer the given questions on their
their whiteboards. The teacher will then walk
whiteboard and ask questions to the teacher if

questions the students might have.
(8~10 minutes)
Differentiation
Students will be given questions to answer on their whiteboard. These questions will be
sequence from basic to complex. Students that finish problems earlier will have an opportunity
to answer the complex questions.
Teacher Will:
Student Will:

students and answer any questions the
students might have.

Differentiation
Students that need extra help (Daniel and Blake) will be given more time to answer the math
problems.
Students that need extra help will also have fewer problems to complete.
Advanced students (Dan and Monique) may be given more difficult math problems to complete.
Closure/Lesson Summary:
The students will be given an ending question to the lesson that they will answer. This question will be
presented in the PowerPoint. The students will then answer the question and turn it in at the end of
class.
