Lesson Title/Topic: Physically demanding careers
Target Concept: The student explores pathways of interest within one or more career
clusters.
Standards/Rationale: 127.4 (c) (2)
The student explores pathways of interest within one or more career clusters. The
student is expected to:
(A) investigate career opportunities within the pathways;
(B) explore careers of personal interest;
(C) research the academic requirements for careers of personal interest;
(D) research the certification or educational requirements for careers of personal
interest; and
(E) describe the technical-skill requirements for careers of personal interest.

Lesson Objectives:

Assessment:

Students will display understanding of physically


demanding careers through correct representation
on a poster project with 80% accuracy.

Poster project based on rubric.

Materials: Adhesive, Grout, Tile, Boards, Trowel, Float, Spacers, Sponges, gloves, bucket,
towel, drop cloth, poster board, game cards, magnets

Put names of careers on a magnetic
board
Have students draw a number
Students will take turns (based on their
number) matching a salary card
(provided by the teacher) to the career.

types of careers demanding different
levels of education, physical
requirements and salaries.

Ask students what they think are
physically demanding careers. Some
possible answers:
o Firefighter
o Policeman
o Military personnel
o Construction worker
o Welder
o Tile Setter
o Painter
o Landscaper
o Carpenter
o Plumber
o Electrician
o Lifeguard

Students should provide feedback on


what they think are physically
demanding careers.

Students should provide feedback on


what type of training would be required
for the careers suggested.

Ask students what different types of


training they think may be required for
these physically demanding careers.
Possible answers:
o On the job
o Apprenticeship

o Bootcamp/Military training
Guided Practice:
Hands on tiling activity
Tell the students what they will be
doing use small tile samples to layout
tile similar to what a tile setter would
do, but on a MUCH smaller scale.
Tell students that they will have two
different size tiles to work with to form
a design.
Provide each student with a board and a
bag of tiles
Demonstrate how to lay down adhesive
on the board.
Demonstrate the placement of tiles
using spacers.
Tell students that they will have 15

minutes to lay down their tile


After 15 minutes demonstrate grouting

Students will each get a board and a


bag of tiles to use.

and cleaning the tile.


The students will not have time to grout
their design. Have them apply grout in
groups of 3 to sample tiles.

Independent Practice:
Have students research physically
demanding careers. They will design a
poster that depicts the approximate salaries,
necessary education/training and degree of
physicality for each career. At least 10
careers should be included. Careers should
be presented in such a way that you could
easily rank the careers by salary or how
physically demanding they are.
Hand out grading rubric and review.
Closure:
Exit ticket Answer the following
