Topic: Synonyms
DIFFERENTATION OF INSTRUCTION
Tier 1: Students will have the definition of the word synonym in front of them in order to match
each word with the correct synonym in the opposite column.
Tier 2: Students will match each word with the correct synonym in the opposite column.
Tier 3: Students will match each word with the correct synonym in the opposite column and
choose one word and write a sentence with the word and its synonym on the back of the
worksheet.
DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
Students will watch a video on synonyms. (What is a synonym? What is an example of a
synonym?)
Students will complete a sheet to match the words with the correct synonym. (How do you
identify the synonym of a word?)
Students will review different synonyms. (What are examples of synonyms of the words happy
and sad?)
ASSESSMENT (Artifacts and assessment [formal & informal])
The students will accurately write three words and their correct synonyms based on words
written on the board.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
The students will complete the synonyms word search and match the words and their synonyms
and write them on the back of the worksheet.
FOLLOW UP: DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION AND ACADEMIC
ENRICHMENT
Direct Teacher Intervention: The teacher and student will work together and read Bink and
Gollie and identify aspects in the book that are the same to help the student understand what the
concept of the word same means and how to identify words with the same meaning.
Academic Enrichment: The student will use the computer to play a synonym review game.
