Instant Activity: High-five tag There are 3-5
its. When students get tagged, they must
balance on one leg and raise up one hand in
preparation for a high-five from a student
who hasnt been tagged. If 5 seconds has
passed, that student joins the taggers.

are performing movement
patterns (like dodging, fleeing,

Set Induction:
So far in our football unit, we have
learned throwing, catching, and punting.
Who here can tell me the cues of
throwing? Catching? Punting? (Student
demonstration for each). Great! Today we
will learn offensive strategies known as
football routes, which are ways to evade
the defense.
Throwing cues:
1) laces, 2) athletic stance, 3) face
sideways to target, 4) bring arm back to
ear, 5) extend and follow through
Catching cues:
1) Eye on ball, 2) triangle with thumbs and
index finger together, 3) bring ball into
body
Punting:
1) Hold, 2) step, 3) drop, 4) swing

Purpose:
We are learning football routes because
they are essential in dodging the other
team to reach an end goal. Other sports
have the same concept but arent called
routes.

Transition
After the tag game, students will return to
homebase, sit quietly, and wait for further
instructions.

Start/Stop Signals:

Freeze to put
equipment down and
stop what theyre
doing

Grouping Strategies:
I will number the
students by 2s. One
person on the line on
homebase and the
partner will stand on
a polyspot 15 feet
away.

20 min. Lesson Core - Task 1:
Diagram Task 1
4 football routes will be taught: hook,
* Diagram below
curl, slant, and fly. Hook and curl routes
U turn depend on the positioning of the
receiver. i.e. receiver on left of thrower,
will turn to the right to make a U. As
soon as the student turns, thrower may
make the pass. The thrower and receiver
must make eye contact. Thrower must
use his/her best judgment when the
receiver will be ready to catch.
Fly aka hail mary, run forward several
feet and get ready to receive a pass
Hook run forward and make a U (in)
Curl run forward and make a U (out)
Slant run a few steps forward, then run
a few steps diagonally (a slant; angle
doesnt matter)
There will be 3 groups so all students
have enough opportunities to practice.
Each group will have 2 lines. There will be
a thrower and a receiver. Once the
receiver catches the ball, he/she will run
back to the line and hand it off to the next
thrower. The thrower will switch lines to
the receiver line while the receiver will
switch to the thrower line. After a few
minutes of practice, the next route will be
introduced.

Demonstration Plan:
I will demonstrate the fly first. Then I will
have a student demonstrate it. Students
will practice for a few minutes. Then I will
demonstrate the next route. A different

students will be learning
movement concepts related to
football such as routes.

student will demonstrate it. Then
students will practice it. Repeat.

Questions to Check Understanding
What is the difference between a hook
route and a curl route?
Hook is inward and curl is outward.
What is a slant route?
A few steps forward, then diagonal path.

Adaptations
Regression: Perform in order (easiest to
hardest): fly, slant, hook, and curl.
Progression: Mix up the routes.

Transition: Students will assist in
collecting equipment and putting them
away. Students will return to home base
for lesson closure and sit quietly.
CLOSURE:
Review:
Today we learned football routes. Who
can show me a hook route? Curl? Slant?
Fly? (Different student for each
demonstration). Great job everyone. Next
week we will continue with the football
unit starting with handoffs on Monday.
