Topic & Essential Question:

Topic: President Abraham Lincoln
Essential Questions:
Who is Abraham Lincoln?
What did he do for our country?
He is one of the presidents that is most remembered. Why is that?
Main Subject: Social Studies, Reading, and Writing.
Questions for Students:
Where have you seen Abraham Lincoln?
What were issues (political or how he lived) that Abraham Lincoln was going through?
Why do you think hes so well known?
What do you think he did for our country?
How does his decision back then impact our life now?
Do you think the decisions back then changed how we live our life now or stay the same?
Content Areas:
The book I will be using is, Magic Tree House: Abe Lincoln at Last by Mary Pope Osborne.
In order to teach this lesson I need to know the response for my essential questions that I
have above for the students. I will have to have read this book to see what background
knowledge the students need for them to understand. Couple things I probably need to research
on are the time period of Abraham Lincoln, different political issues that were going on and the
way of life. If there are topics or events that I do not know, I need to research and learn about
them.
For the different resources, I would like to use different historical pictures, videos, song,
and other articles that as a class we can read. One thing I really want to show students is how the
time period of when Abraham Lincolns lived is different from today. The types of pictures,
writing, daily life looked, and how they even dressed. To make that all possible I think the only
way to make that happen is by providing pictures, videos, and providing different independent
reading books to students to read on their own or look through. For the culminating activity I
would like to take the students to Springfield to see the life of Abraham Lincoln museum. The
problem I see with this is that my students are very young, and this is a very far trip to make. I
am not sure if the school, or my teacher would allow this trip.
Planning for Students Learning:
For this unit I would like the students to learn about President Abraham Lincoln and what he
accomplished during his presidency. I would like the students to understand that he made a huge
impact on history in the African-American community. Within in this unit
Students will be able to put themselves in the shoes of the past.

Students will be able to become the experts of President Abraham Lincoln by retelling
what he has accomplished through conversations and writing assignments.
Students will be able to retell, write, and discuss what President Lincoln was fighting for
politically.
Students will be able to retell the main events in President Abraham Lincolns life.
Students will be able to write, retell, and share what kind of impact President Lincoln
made in our history.
Students will be able to make comparisons on what life would look like with and without
President Lincolns impact in history.
After this unit I want to talk to students about what happened next after President Lincolns
achievements. Did we see change, or was it still the same? With this question in mind I thought it
would be nice to move into the Civil Rights Movement. By starting that unit we will talk about
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in whom I believe my students have an interest.
Formative Assessments:
-In class discussions
-In class writing assignments
Summative Assessments:
-End of the week creative assignment.
Each week I would like for the class to focus on one topic and have a small activity that
would sum up what they learned that week.
-The final activity will be where the students would tell others, through writing or with a speech,
what President Abraham Lincoln has done for our country. I would like the students to answer
the essential questions for the unit. For a challenge students will also, through writing, tell others
if President Lincoln did not accomplish the things that he accomplished back then, how our lives
would be different today. I would like the students to be ready to share these writings as
speeches, and be prepared to share their piece in front of the class only if they feel comfortable.
Importance for Learners:
I believe this topic is very important. The students learned about President Lincoln in
their Investments class because his face is on a penny. The students know him and have heard
of him, but I believe they do not know why he is important in country. This is a very important
issue for students to learn at a young age because this is still an issue that we are struggling with.
I am not sure if students do know about issues with race, but this is specifically about their own
race and I think it would be nice for these students to know about what people struggled with in
the past. I want to show students the differences of then and now, and how there was one
President that tried to help and make a difference in this issue. President Lincoln was one
President that made an amendment to get rid of slavery. This historical event was a step to
equality for all, and I believe that is very important for students to know.
By introducing this topic of race and equality. I hope that this would be the first step for
the students to understand how they are able to receive the education that they have, and if it was
not for President Lincoln that many areas of their lives would be very different. Something that I
would like the students to challenge them with is to think about how they see equality in their
lives. Do they think that they or their families are being treated equally? I remember in an
education class that we took in the program they mentioned how students are able to see race and

difference in people very early in their lives. I believe that bringing this topic to the table will
help some students understand different issues that they may be faced daily. I am hoping that the
students would feel comfortable with bring personal experiences, and possibly asking more
questions about the topic of race and equality.

4. 16.B.1c. World History: Explain the contributions of individuals and groups who are
featured in biographies, legends, folklore and traditions.
Culminating Project:
Like I mentioned earlier in the summative assessment portion I would like students to answer the
questions through writing, and also to talk about how President Lincoln made an impact in our
history. I would like the students to also answer the question, How would today be different if
President Lincoln did not accomplish what he accomplished? This whole project will have a
writing component, but I would also like the students to share their writing piece into a speech. I
want the students to try reading their piece like a speech because President Lincoln had a lot of
speeches as well. Thought it would be fun for the students to pretend to be like Abraham Lincoln.

Resource Bibliography:
1. http://mrnussbaum.com/abraham_lincoln/
-This website helps kids see the different important events that happened in President
Lincolns life and give the students a chance to click the box and explore. The reading
may be hard for students, so it would be better for the whole class to read it together.
2. Magic Tree House: Abe Lincoln at Last by Mary Pope Osborne
-This will be the main book that students will be reading from. This will be a way to help
students have fun with learning about Lincolns life, and also it is a great way for students
to compare what was read in the book and the different facts that we learn about
President Lincoln.
3. http://www.teachertube.com/video/abraham-lincoln-119899
-This video is a good visual that would help students understand the life of Abraham
Lincoln. There are some parts that are unnecessary for my class, so I would click at
certain parts that are important to my unit.
4. http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/unit/abraham-lincoln-everything-you-need
-This is just a site where they give different resources about Abraham Lincoln at the first
grade level. I loved the different non-fictional books that I could get to add to the library
of the classroom. By doing that the students will be able to pick this book at their own
leisure and explore more about President Lincoln.
5. A Picture Book of Abraham Lincoln by David A. Adler
-This book will be great for students that cannot read very well, but will learn about
Lincolns biography. There were very good reviews on this book between the grades of
first to fourth. Thought it would be nice to get students slowly introduced to
autobiographies.
6. Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco
-This book is a great book that talks about an event that happened during President
Lincolns term, and it also talks about race. Thought this would be a good book to relate it
back to what we were learning about how African-Americans were treated at that time.
7. Magic Tree House: Abraham Lincoln Fact Tracker by Mary Pope Osborne
-Thought this would be a great connection to the chapter book that the students are
reading. This book would be very useful for more information on Abraham Lincoln.
8. http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plan/three-abraham-lincoln-readers-theaterscripts
-Scholastic has scripts that students could read about Abraham Lincoln, and this would be
great for students to read and possible reenact. This would really help students to put
themselves in the past and give them a better picture of what Abraham Lincolns life was
like.
