Middle School Lesson Plan
Grade Level: 5
Subject: Money

Topic: Percentages related to Italian culture

Objective: The students will be able to outline the major characteristics of the Italian regions
related to percentages of population, employment, production of goods etc., while at the same
time they are going to learn new vocabulary related to the theme.
Standards: NJCCCS for World Languages (NJCCCS, 2009).
7.1. NM.A.4 Identify familiar people, places, and objects based on simple oral and/or written
descriptions.
7.1. NM. A.1 Recognize familiar spoken or written phrases contained in culturally authentic
materials using electronic information sources related to target themes.
7.1. NM.B.4 Ask and respond to simple questions, make request, and express preference using
memorized words and phrases.
Materials:
Students: notebook, pencil or pen
Teacher: PowerPoint slides, projector and screen, maps, books, outline rubric.
Prerequisite Skills and Knowledge: The students have recently learned the terminology and the
value of Italian money and to purchase items using Italian phrases and vocabulary.
Anticipatory Set: Enter classroom with a map of Italy that shows all the different regions.
Input and Modeling: The teacher will provide an outline template for each student to complete
throughout the presentation of the PowerPoint slides that will focus on the key elements and
vocabulary related to the Italian country and specific characteristics connected to economic,
demographic, and geographic aspects of the country. During the presentation the teacher will
complete the outline template and project the slides on the screen for the students to follow and
check for correctness.

Student Practice and Checking for Understanding:


1. Students will complete a little vocabulary exercise related to the Italian terminology of
percentages. They will translate words and little sentences from Italian to English and
from English to Italian.
2. Students will respond to a questionnaire about the main characteristics of the different
regions, related to the percentages of demographic of each region compared to the
entire country, and the percentages of the production income of each region and
average income per inhabitant.
3. Students will see pictures of the regions on the screen and try to connect with the right
name, while on the screen a picture of the entire country is shown as a reference.
4. Students will form little groups, and each group will receive cut outs of the Italian
regions that they need to put together to build the entire peninsula, and recognize on the
map which region, is richer percentage wise.
5. The teacher will walk around to check for correctness in their answers and provide
constructive feedback by explaining any unclear point to each group.

Closure: Lesson Wrap-up and Culminating activity


1. As a wrap-up activity students will be given an assignment with questions related to
demographic percentage of each region compared to the national average, and asked to compare
the percentage of the national average income per inhabitant with the average income per
inhabitant of the different regions.
2. At the end of the unit of study the students will be tested on fractions, percentage and
decimals. The test will include adding and subtracting all topics, converting one into another and
word problems

3. At the end of the unit students will be given a quiz in which they will be graded with a rubric
that evaluates the grammar, the vocabulary, spelling and organization of learned sentences and
vocabulary as well as the cultural aspect of Italy. They will also be quizzed on fractions,
decimals and percentage dealing with the culture of Italy.
