At DepEd, ICT is giving a boost

to modernization program
The Department of Education (DepEd),
through its Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) unit,
said it is now utilizing modern technology
to hasten the computerization efforts in
schools and DepEd offices.

Among the ICT projects is the Enhanced Basic Education

Information System (EBEIS), an online facility for encoding,
storage, and report generation of all school information
such as enrolment, resource inventories, and special
programs. DepEd secretary Armin Luistro said that moving
towards an online and automated system of gathering data
and putting it into a database provides the agency with more
relevant and accurate information for decision-making and
planning. He added that this is critical in managing a very
large bureaucracy like DepEd.

Main objective of the Deped programThis project aims to aid in providing learners and educators access

to learning materials within their areas. The whole system also

intends to harvest materials developed by our own teachers with
the intent of recognizing quality material and share it with fellow
teachers and educators under an open sharing platform.
These programs will help our learners have more access to relevant,
up-to-date, and quality education materials. It also provides a
database to our educators where they can derive their lessons from.
These materials will assist them in their lesson plans, and may also
give an array of contextualized classroom discussions.
This program intends to aid in data collection, planning
processes, and allocation of resources budget allocations per
area, distribution of donations during disasters

SEMINAR AND PROGRAMS FOR TEACHERS IN

ICT
CHED MEMO 30 s 2004. Teaching Training Curriculum.

The Commission on Higher (CHED) issued its Memorandum Order

No.30 s. 2004, entitled REVISED POLICIES AND STANDARDS FOR
UNDERGRADUATE TEACHER EDUCATION CURRICULUM to
improve quality of teacher education in the Philippines and to define
highest standards in objectives, components and processes of the preservice teacher education curriculum. It supported new subjects and
provided wide learning opportunities that a pre-service teacher should
take advantage in the knowledge based society. Like rudimentary
knowledge and skill in word-processing, use of email, and use of the
Web. Teacher education training efforts will be re-focused on the
requirements of the learners and the job market through the use of
ICT.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION MODERNIZATION

PROGRAM.
This program encourages the use of ICT in education to improve the teaching and
learning process, educational management and support operations in the educational
system. Dep Ed strives to provide use of IT equipment in public secondary schools,
providing the necessary funds for the procurement of hardware and software, teacher
training and courseware development.
The Philippine Government believes that basic education should "evolve and nurture
an ICT framework designed to enhance, broaden, strengthen and transform learning to
develop the Filipino learner into a person who is excellence-driven, global in
perspective, innovative, ingenious and creative, with a deep sense of community and
concern for harmony and the common good."
Toward this vision, basic education must empower learners, equipping them for the
challenges in the new millennium by improving the quality and accessibility of
education through the use of appropriate ICT.

Executive Order 483

Establishing the UNESCO Lifelong Learning Center for Sustainable

Development of the Philippines designating the Operation Brotherhood
Montessori, Inc. therefore as the National Laboratory
Given the supportive infrastructure in the country, the Philippines has begun
to re-conceptualize the policies and strategies of teacher education
towards lifelong learning with continuing professional development for
reaching out to the marginalized sectors as an enabling tool to achieve
education for all. Executive Order no. 483 aims to popularize lifelong learning
initiatives in the country and in the Asia Pacific Region. The center believes
that to foster lifelong learning skills in learners, educational development with
a principal focus on quality and access should utilize different strategies and
channels especially thru the use ICT in its programmes.

WHAT IS THE BRIDGE GAP OF THE TRADITIONAL

TEACHER TO THE MODERN TEACHERS
Traditional teaching is concerned with the teacher being the controller of the
learning environment. Power and responsibility are held by the teacher and
they play the role of instructor (in the form of lectures) and decision maker
(in regards to curriculum content and specific outcomes). They regard
students as having 'knowledge holes' that need to be filled with information.
In short, the traditional teacher views that it is the teacher that causes
learning to occur
Traditional method of teaching is when a teacher directs students to learn
through memorization and recitation techniques thereby not developing
their critical thinking problem solving and decision making skills (Sunal et al
1994) while modern or constructivist approach to teaching involves a more
interacting, student-based of teaching. Here, the students learn through
group participation.
