OLTD 506 Putting it all Together

The evidence I have chosen to reflect my learning in OLTD 506 is the exercise titled:
Putting It All Together. The evidence is a comprehensive information package documenting
the necessary foundational information to use Facebook (specifically) as a digital tool in a
post-secondary educational setting. The information package includes Facebook specific
learning activities, a policy review of VIU and FIPPA requirements, consent forms, online
etiquette, and a tool risk assessment. This package can be used as a template for any social
media tool that is considered for classroom use.

I have learned to view digital tools with a critical eye especially as it pertains to safety of
students. It requires seeing beyond the glitz and really poking around in the fine print.
Learning how to analyze tools with Hengstlers tool risk assessment will assist me in my
ventures as an online educator and a purveyor of fine social media tools. The specific OLTD
program outcomes this evidence reflects are:

Develop and design intentional learning activities suitable for the appropriate
environment and the learner
Critically assess and evaluate resources for best practice in OL learning
Consider responsibility, accountability and civility in OL environments
Demonstrate basic competency with design and implementation within a variety of
OL learning environments and tools

The program outcomes achieved with this evidence marks a pinnacle of knowing for me.
This exercise has demonstrated how to question or solidify judgment on social media tools
but by extension all activities considered for OL education. I have a better understanding of
the underpinnings of why a tool is suitable or not for a specific task. Achieving these
outcomes has allowed me a competence with an important aspect of OL teaching.

popular amongst all ages, however all users must be at least 13 years of age.
There is no financial cost associated with joining or using the site as advertising
generates the sites revenue.
Medical Terminology Abbreviations of the Week

Twice each week (Tuesday/Thursday) 10 common medical abbreviations

will be posted on the Facebook site. (20 per week)
Pairs of students will translate the abbreviations into the correct terms. Eg:
# means fracture
Students will be expected to post (2-3) short written scenarios that reflect
Activity Idea 1:
the correct usage of the terminology. It is expected that the scenarios will
use multiple abbreviations/terms.
Eg: Mrs. Brown is recovering from a fracture (#) of her left (Lt or L) hip

The first 4 student pairs with postings that indicate correct interpretation
each Tuesday and Thursday will win a prize from the infamous prize bag.
The goal is that all students will know the medical terms, their
abbreviations and understand their context in a clinical setting.

Mental Health Disorder in preparation Assignment

Activity Idea 2:

-Students will be assigned in groups of (3) to research (1) MH disorder and

compile (4) digital resources for the rest of the class to access. These
digital resources are actually the in preparation aspect for the f2f class
on November 18 & 19 (AM).
Resources should detail the disorder signs, symptoms, treatments,
contributing factors, effects on family and if possible caregiving
considerations.
Groups will post all of their digital resources by November 7.
The groups will be determined by having names chosen from a hat.
The final groups as well as the 10 disorders to be researched will be posted
on this site.
Groups will post their top 3 choices of the disorders they would like to
research.
(You will be assigned one of your choices.)

Find and post 1-2 applicable video clips and 2 applicable text sites.
As this is a student led learning situation it is expected the chosen digital
resources will be applicable to your disorder and are easily accessed with
active links.

Use sites that are recognized as medically trustworthy sources and are

Eg: Mayo clinic, Canadian Mental Health Association would both be

Current Affairs in Canadian Healthcare

Students are encouraged to post current healthcare stories that emerge

in BC or Canada (or US if applicable). The intent is to increase awareness
of the ever-changing Canadian healthcare landscape.
Activity Idea 3:
The posts can be news articles, podcasts, blogs or opinion pieces.

HCA Online Etiquette

By: Denise Andersen RN; BN, Instructor
The golden rule your parents taught you or you learned in kindergarten is quite simple: Do
unto others, as youd have others do unto you. Or put into another form. Remember the
human! There is another person who has feelings more or less like you at the other end of
the computer-based conversation.
1. If you wouldnt say it to a persons facethen dont say it online.
2. Adhere to the same standards online as you do in real lifebe ethical & professional
3. Lurk before you leaptake a look around the site, read what others are posting, get
a sense of how everyone acts
4. You do have something to offerdont be afraid to share what you know
5. Know what you are talking about and make sensemake yourself look good online
6. Be pleasant and polite. Dont use offensive language, its considered tasteless. Use
the infamous asterisk S***. Everyone knows what you mean and you wont offend
most people
7. Respect other peoples privacy.
8. Be forgiving of other peoples mistakesyou were new to social media once too!
9. Your posts are stored in the USA once they are out there you have no control over
them
