How did the Roman Empire differ from the Roman Republic?

Overview/Rationale:
To provide an overview of the transition from Republic to Empire and encourage
students to reflect on power, leadership, and public perception.
Enduring Understanding:
Students will examine how do power, leadership, and public perception effect each other.
Goals and Objectives:
Students will be able to identify the role that gladiator games played in Roman society.
Students will understand the political changes that occurred between the Roman Republic
and Empire.
Standards (Correlation with PA Core):
CC.8.5.11-12.C.Evaluate various explanations for actions or events and determine which
explanation best accords with textual evidence, acknowledging where the text leaves
matters uncertain.
CC.8.5.11-12.G.Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in
diverse formats and media (e.g., visually, quantitatively, as well as in words) in order to
address a question or solve a problem.

Procedures:
Opener:
I will begin by asking students to take out their HW on Spartacus and the gladiators and
share their findings with their neighbor.
Body of the Lesson:
Introduce to students some aspects of gladiators & Roman entertainment via PP (15 min)
Go over the end of Wednesdays assignment Was Caesar a tyrant or hero? (10-15 min)
Short stretch (1 min)
Model note-taking format for students
Closure:
End the lesson by summarizing the main ideas and assigning HW: Is democracy the
ideal form of government? Why or why not?
Accommodations/ Intervention / Enrichment:

Students with a documented need through an IEP and or 504-service agreement will be given the
accommodations necessary for them to complete this assignment. This includes, but is not
limited to access to less complex, yet parallel readings, preferential seating and extended time.
ELL students will been given additional time to read the articles using their translators as needed.
Additionally, I will circulate throughout the room assessing student progress and ensuring that all
students have a thorough understanding of the assignment and expectations.
Summative Assessment/Evaluation: During the lesson I will keep track of who is who is
participating in the whole class discussion.
