Thisisthedatabaseofinformationforthestudybelow.Thereisabreakdownofeachpageof
thedatabasefurtherdownthisdocument.Themostimportantpageisthetabcalled
Analysiscolourcodedorangeforeasiernavigation.Thisiswheretheimportantinformation
gatheredinthestudyisvisualised.

Aswithanylongitudinaldesignmethodology,itisimportanttofigurethespecificsoutbefore
thestudybegins.Thisistoensurethatanyeffortinobtaininginformationisntwastedbythe
discoveryofissuesorproblemswiththeexperimentdesignorthemethodology.Forthis
reason,ItookalotoftimeatthebeginningoftheprojecttoensureIwasinvestingmytime
intosomethingthatcouldbeconsideredalegitimatestudyefficacy,reliability,validitywere
the3mainpointstoconsider.

ThenextpointtoconsiderwashowwasIgoingtovalidatethestudy.Thenextstepwasto
researchappropriatepersonalitytypestoobtainagoodpersonalityportfolioofeach
participant.Iresearchedseveraldifferentpersonalitytests,buttheonethatstoodouttome
themostforthepurposesofthestudy,wastheMyersBriggspersonalitytest.Originally
createdduringWartimetorecruitWomenintotheworkforce,theMyersBriggspersonalitytest
utilisedalargearrayofquestionstofitacandidateinto1of2categoriesineachofthefour
personalityareas:

Introverted/Extroverted
Sensing/iNtuitive
Thinking/Feeling
Perceiving/Judging

AcopyofthepersonalitytestthatIutilisedcanbefoundatthebottomofthis
document.

Ithoughtthistestwouldbeperfectinisolatinganypotentialpatternsortrendsasitcoversa
lotofpersonalitytraits.NowthatIknewwhattestIwouldusetoverifytheparticipant's
individualpersonalitycharacteristics,Ineededtoworkonobtaininginformationforthesecond
partofthestudy,theperceivedproductivity.

BecauseIneededtoquantifywhatwouldhavebeenconsideredassubjective,qualitative

data,IdecidedthatIneededtogettheparticipantstoanswerthefollowingfourquestions
onascaleof110.

weeklybasis,allowingmetracktheprogressovertime.

NowthatIknewwhatIwantedtotestandthemethodologyIwouldimplementinordertotest
it,IapproachedtwoJunior/SeniorGameDevelopmentgroups(ChilliChilliStudios&
Ironworks).Ifullyinformedtheparticipantsandgotthemeachtosignaninformedconsent
form.Idecidedthatinordertoimprovemyresponseratefromparticipantsthatboththe
personalitytestandthequestionsheetswouldbeprintedoutandhandedtotheparticipants
asitiseasytodisregardalinkwhereasaphysicalpieceofpaperinfrontofthemwouldbe
muchhardertoignore.

AsthegroupswereintwodifferentroomsfortheDevelopmentsessions,inordertoimprove
thevalidityofthestudy,IisolatedChilliChilliStudiostoreplicateascloselyaspossiblethe
DevelopmentroomofIronworks.InadditionIensurethatthequestionsheetswerecompleted
attheendofthedayforbothgroupsastogetasaninformedresponseaspossible.One
thingthatIcouldnotaddressisthefactthatthegroupsattendedtheirsessionsondifferent
days:ChilliChilliStudiosonTuesdaysclosetothebeginningoftheweek,andIronworkson
Thursdaysclosetotheendoftheweek.TherewasliterallynothingIcoulddo,sothereisa
slightpossibilitythatresultsobtainedfromtthetwogroupscouldbeslightlyskewed,although
anotherexperimentwouldbeneededtoisolatethetimeoftheweekasanindependent
variable:somethingwhichIdidnthavethetimeortheresourcesfor.

Forthenextsixweeks,ImadeapointnottoevaluateanyoftheinformationthatIhad
gatheredgiventhechancethatthismightinfluencetheresultsasoneofthegroupIwasthe
Producerof.Instead,inthemeantime,Isetaboutbuildingaframeworksothatoncethestudy
wascomplete,Icouldstarttoanalysethemalmoststraightaway.

Anothernoteworthypoint,becauseIhaddecidedtoprintoutthePersonalitytestsforpeople,
ItmeantthatIhadtomanuallyentertheresultsforeachparticipantintothecalculatorto
obtainindividualresultsbeing72questionslongforeachparticipant,thiswasnoquickand
easytask.

theIronworksSensinggroup,butseeasharpincreaseafterChristmasbreak.

Bothgroupsshowconsistencieswithperceivedgroupproductivitythroughoutthe
lengthofthestudy.

Bothteamsseeaninitialincreaseinperceivedproductivityinallgroupfromthe
firstweektothesecondweek,howeverwiththeexceptionofExtrovertand
SensinggroupsinIronworks,thisisfollowedbyadecrease.

positivetrendinsatisfactionrightupuntiltheendofthestudy.Thisisalmost

Inconclusion,thereisclearlyadifferenceintheperceptionofproductivityand
personalitytypes,evidentwithinanoverallaverageanalysis,agroupbygroup
breakdownandalsotheindividualanalysisoftypologies.Thesheerandsignificant
variationinresultsdemonstratethatthestudyhasindeedidentifiedacorrelation
betweenpersonalityandperceivedproductivity.Iwillattempttoexplaintheresults,but
giventhenatureofthestudy,alotoftheinformationorexplanationswillbeopento
interpretationdependingonthereader.

Themostproductivegroup,surprisinglyistheIntrovertgroup,comparedwiththeleast
productivegroup(s)ThinkingandSensing,whoshareresultsthataretoocloseto
call.

IthinkthatthismaybedowntothecommonunderstandingthatIntrovertedindividuals

aremorefocusedontheself,andthereforehaveahigherunderstandingofpersonal
achievement.Byhavinganisolatedattitudetotherestofthedevelopmentgroup,they
donotcomparetheirworkwithothers,butseekdirectresponsesfromLeadsandStaff
memberstoreassurethemselves.

ItismyopinionthatbothThinkingandSensinggroupswarpandskewtheavailable
informationbyseekingasmuchaspossiblefromtheirsurroundingsandenvironment
andthishastheeffectofdegradingandconvolutingtheirownunderstandingand
perception.TheThinkinggroupmaydothisbyoveranalysingthesituation,depending
toomuchonlogicalsolutionsandnotbalancingtheirpsychewithamoresubjectiveand
emotionalviewresultinginoverconfidence,sothatwhentheyaretoldtogobackand
redoworkthattheyweresurewasgoodenough,ithasaknockoneffectontheir
perceptionofproductiveness.TheSensinggrouphaveanoppositestance,but
ironicallythiscausesthesameeffectinbothgroups.Byconcentratingmoreontheir
instinctandgoingwithwhattheyfeelpeopleneed,theyisolatethemselvesfromthe
biggerpicture,havingtheexactsameeffectontheirperceptionofproductivityasabove.

TheFeelinggrouphaveonaverage,thehighestratedperceptionofgroupproductivity
whereastheSensinggrouphavethelowest.Thisisareallysurprisingresultasboth
ofthesetypologiesshareacommonfoundationappealingtoemotionandgutfeeling.
Mymosteducatedguesswouldbedowntoperceptionsfrombothgroupsbeing
inaccurate.Isolatinginformationbeforemakingadecisionisneveragoodidea.Itis
goodtogetabalancedviewandnottorelytooheavilyoninstinct.

Eachpersonalitytyperatedtheirgroupsproductivityhigherthantheirown.Ithinkthis
wastodowiththequestionitself.Whenaskedaquestionpertainingtooneself,the
questionisoftenoverthoughtorskewedthroughexperimenterbias.Iwouldhave
personallyexpectedtoseeareverseresult,inwhichpeopleratetheirown
productivenesstobehigherthantheirgroups,particularlytheExtrovertsgroup,butwe
canseeaconsistentsignificantresultthatdemonstratedthatallgroupsrategroup
productivityhigherthanindividualproductivity.

ThegroupwiththehighestratingofhappinesswasJudgingandtheleast,Feeling.
Thereisasignificantdifferencebetweentheresultsgatheredrelatedtothesetwo
groups.IwouldexpectthattheJudginggroupishappiestbecausetheywouldbeusing
themselvesasthestandardwithinadevelopmentenvironment,whereastheFeeling
grouparemoreintunewithemotion,oftenoverthinkingthingsorinterpretingthingsin
awayotherthanintended,ofteninanegativeway,wouldcouldleadtoamoreindepth
selfanalysisleadingtoagenerallymoreunhappyindividual.
