Final Draft
Choosing a major is an important decision for everyone in college. The major that you
choice will effect your future careers so if you did not make a right choice in college it will
cause many trouble to you in the future. However, the college provides a vast resource
advantage to everyone. There are a variety of materials to help you choose a major so when
you graduate, you will feel confident that you made the right choices for your career.
First of all, every college students has a problem about choose major and future career
decision making and I am not exception. I always think that what should I do in the future.
Before I start this project 2, I havent decided what major should I take. I was always thought
that should I take accounting or business management or other major. I just always escape
about choose my major. Because of this project 2, I begin to seriously think about what I
want to do in my future and what is my future goal. I had told with my parents and make an
appointment with counselor. I was trying to talk with them and discuss the problems that I
have. They gave me lots of advises. For Instance, my counselor told me that just choose a
major that I like very much if I dont like the major that I choices, it will very hard for me to
learn and study, it will effect my GPA and my attitude of learning. Moreover, my parents told
me that I just choose whatever I like and my parents gave me the only condition is I must go
back to Malaysia to help them after I graduation. It doesnt matter I choose accounting or
business management if I choose business management I must manage their company and I
choose accounting I must do an accountant in their company. In addition, I have also did
some survey on the Internet as a reference. According to the information on the internet, there
are some job market for business management and accounting is growing up. For Instance,
accountants and auditors job growth up 16%, bookkeepers and accounting clerks job growth
up14%, sales managers career growth up12% and training managers career growth up 15%.
That means the market needs a large number of such talents at the following few years. After
I told with them and did the research, I had to thought deeply and I decided to take the double

major so my major are business management and accounting.

Because of my family, I would choose business management become a part of my major.
My parents demands me to take business management because my family has own business
in Malaysia. It is about catering industry so my parents hope me can help them after I
graduation. I understand that my parents are getting old and have worked hard most of their
life so I decided work with my parents after I graduation. If I want to manage my parents
company, I must have some career skills about business management such as communication
and coordination, business environment skill, problem solving, process and planning,
marketing, project and process flow skills and so on. Those career skills can help me to learn
how to manage a business. Actually, my mother was an accountant before she worked with
my father. My mother used to be a very good accountant but my father's business has become
very busy, so she was quite her job and work with my father. When I was young, my mother
want to take care of me and my older brother so she often bring some works back home to do.
Because of the influence of my mother, I am very interesting in accounting. I still remember
that when I was 16 years old, my parents had engaged a tutor and taught me Accounting until
I came to America. I would choose to study in America because I want to learn English. I
know that Business Management and Accounting will exposed to a lot of things are about
English so thats why I want to learn English in America. Like business management, I will
encounter a lot of people come from different countries and some related to field problems
also come into contact with English so I choose to study in the United States. Because all
sorts of reasons, I have more confidence to choose this major and learning English.
What is the meaning of discourse community? According to my dictionary, discourse
community is a generally defined as a community of people who use a particular kind of
language or discourse. In my point of view, discourse community means which language will
we be using in our future jobs and careers field. In order to help us to know more about my
future discourse community and my future job, so our professor required us to interview
someone who is a recent graduate or already working in my chosen career.
At first, I did not know have any ideas about who I want to interview then I decided to
interviewed my friends sister. Since our family business is the same business field and she

also was double major, so I decided to interview her. Her name is Soo Shan Cheng and 25
years old. She comes from Malaysia but she was studied at Singapore, when she was young.
After she graduated in Singapore, she went to Australia and studied at Curtin University
Australia. She did not educated in Malaysia so she did not know about Malaysia Education.
We conducted my interview by email and Skype to make a phone call. She knows a little of
Mandarin but we were using English when I interview her. In view of I have a barely English,
she tried to speak slowly and answer me with some simple vocabularies. She is a very
friendly person and patient girl. Her major was business management, entrepreneurship and
accounting. She is doing the operation part in her parents company and she has been working
in her parents company for almost 3 years. Her company has 21 branches in Malaysia, 7
branches in Indonesia and 3 branches in Singapore. They are selling Southeast Asia Cuisine.
She works as a team with area manager and a area manager is the person who manages few
branches in hand. She loves her job and loves interacting with people, especially customers.
Even thought she usually manage the operation part by communicating with her area
managers, however she still have chance to interact with customers when she inspect the
branch operation. She likes to learn as much as she can because in food and business industry,
there are many unexpected matters happen and she has to make sure customers are satisfied
with the food and service. It is very challenging for her.
In addition, she feels the most challenging part is to make sure her team to respect her. It
is because she is too young to became their department head, it needs to have some confident
and courage to lead people and to gain recognition. Gradually, she through her own efforts to
prove that she can be their department head. Her discourse community is using English
because she is mainly responsible for overseas branches especially Singapore branches so her
customers mostly come from different places. According in my interview, I found that my
future discourse community will be using English, Mandarin and Bahasa Melayu. Bahasa
Melayu is a one of the main language in Malaysia, if I want to do a business in Malaysia I
must know how to speak and listen this language so I can communicate with my colleagues
and customers. Furthermore, English is the world language used by most people. Since
business scope is too large and too many internationalization need to know so I think that

English is very important for me in my future job and careers. I think that no matter in which
countries or company, know different language is very helpful in our future jobs and careers
especially English and Mandarin.
In the interview, I had ask Soo Shan what is the differences between school and the real
job. She answered me that they do not apply practical experience, they are only study and
learn theory in school but in the real job, it is not. In the real job, it is about application and
development of skill. Actually, Soo Shan had give me a suggestion, she said Internship may
help you in terms of giving you a real job working experience and you can apply your
knowledge in a practical way (Interview questions and Answer#12). I think that she really
gave me a great suggestion so I decided to go a company internship and accumulate some
work experience after that I can more easily to use the knowledge in a practical way at my
parents company.
What is the role of education in the preparation of college students for future jobs and
careers? I have some own ideas and pursuits about college education. In my opinion, College
Education is a part of our education should not go away because it is to help us can more
quickly integrate into our future jobs and careers. As a college student, I consider that college
education is a position of significant role for college students in their future jobs and careers.
First of all, College education is more and more important in society. I believe that have
a college education can be able to find a more suitable job. According to what I am informed,
people are always said that there are more and more job require college degree and no matter
in which country and company. For example, I have an experience to support my thesis but
the experience is about my two friends. They are living in Malaysia. Their names are Eve and
Gan, both of them are very excellent in learning. I still remember that they would always get
an A in their exams. Eve comes from a wealthy family but Gan is not. When they graduated
from high school, Eve had the opportunity to study in United Kingdom. Because of family
background, Gan could not go abroad to study and her family has not have extra money for
her to study at local college. Consequently, she began to look for a job and she got a job in a
small company, which is a small post. A few years later, Eve graduated from University and
looked for a job in Malaysia. Actually, Gan felt that she could not develop her own strengths

at the old company very well so she was also looking for a better job. They decided to send
an application to the same new company. Since Eve has a college degree, she was admitted to
the new company. Now, there are many companies pay attention to college education. In
contrast, there are many college graduates are employed in jobs that do not require college
degrees and there are some small companies that do not want a college degree because they
arent willing to pay such a high salary. However, Gan did not get a higher salary without a
college degree. Last year, I went back to Malaysia and she told me that she want went to
college and became a part time student. If she has a college degree then she will more easily
find a suitable job with a high salary. From my friends experience, I strongly think that
college education is very important for our future job and career.
I also know that college education has provided many different and useful lessons to help
us in our future jobs and careers. Even though some people think that you only learn theory
without practical experience in college, it is not helpful in future jobs and careers. However, I
still think that those knowledge can help us solve some variety of problems. I also consider
that college education is not only teach us basic knowledge, it was also teach us how to find
the correct way to solve some problems. Sometimes, we cannot solve those problems by our
personal practical experience, so professional knowledge, which you learn in college can help
you to solve it. In my interview, Soo Shan said The very helpful in my career class is
Human Resource Management. This class is told about people management. It helped me
know how to motivate my employees or team members and increase their productivity in
work, because unproductive people will cause me trouble as they are not contributing to my
team. I find it benefits me because those motivation factors and evaluation methods are
working in real company( Interview questions and Answers #5). According to the results of
my interview, she has learned how to motivate her employees or team members and increase
their productivity in work is very significant from the Human Resource Management. If she
did not have a college education, she would spend a lot of time in this area. Therefore, I
believe that college education can help us do some good preparation for our future job and
career.
Freedom is the most important thing to help us in our future jobs and careers. In Hos

essay, the author said They are never deprived of it: freedom(113). I think, that extends
even to children the license to freely speak, write and be creative(114). I agree with Ho
because this is the most important for us in our future. Some people object, they think that
you learn how to smoothly speak, write and think which are not helpful in our future job and
career. Because they consider that think freely cause people too freedom, it will make
people lazy. If people became lazy, it will not motivation to work harder and will not
concentrate in something. However, I still think that freedom is very helpful in our future.
You will have a better development space in our future job and career. A real experience that I
know about my cousin. He lives in Hongkong and graduated from the USA. He likes design
very much so his major was interior design. He told me that College Education provided a
freedom environment and atmosphere for him so that he could freely think about his design
and his professor always encouraged him to have a wealth of creative. After he graduated, he
has become more outstanding in the interior design. Since his design work was very
fashionable and innovation, he was praised by his boss. In his constant efforts, he became
very successful Now, she is an excellent interior designer. In todays society, you need to do
something with innovative ideas to make a breakthrough. Therefore, I consider that freely
think, write and speak that you learn in college is very helpful in you future jobs and careers.
Therefore, I strongly think that college education is very helpful for us to make a
preparation in our future jobs and careers. However in Hos essay, the author had give a good
example to support his thesis. He said that Our public education certainly is not perfect, but
it is a great deal better than any other ( pg114). I have also the same way of thinking with
Ho. In my opinion, college education maybe is not perfect, but it is a great deal better than
any other plan. Finally, I believe that college just like a small society. For example, learning
how to communicate with people, some clubs activities can help us have a teamwork with
group member and learning how to get along with friends. Thus, everything that you learn in
college is help us to prepare in advance. I hope everyone can enjoy their college life and the
theory that we learn in college will help us to prepare be a part member of our future jobs and
careers.
At last, I think that interview my friends sister and argument essay help me have more

information about my major and then college education is well prepared for my future jobs
and careers. In my interview, Soo Shan spent some time to talk with me and she had answer
me those problems that I ask her very clearly. She had also told me some things about her
work. However, I learn some interesting things about my future jobs and careers. She has
give me an advice, she said that Do not stop learning because life does not stop teaching. I
agree with her because life never stop teaching, everyday has a lot of different things will be
happen. When I was born, my father started to do a business and my mother was an
accountant. I often hear them discuss some problems about their company. Thus, my parents
affect me a lots of ideas in my major decision-making process and influenced me in depth
about how to do a business. Actually, I like accounting but my parents hope me can choose
business management so I decided to choose double major. She has recommend a good book
to me and this book can help me to think about my future career. The book is Inside Apple
and wrote by Adam Lashinky. I am going to read this book during the summer. She had also
tell me that I must to seriously study in college because college education is help me to
prepare in advance for my future job and career. Moreover, I will learn some career skills
about business management and accounting in college education. I am also planning go to a
company internship then I can learn some working experience in the company after I
graduation.
I know that double major is a big challenge for me but I always believe that the pressure
will be the motivation to push me to learning and to learn more carefully. In addition, I think
the most important thing that I must change is my character because I am a very shy person,
sometimes I do not know how to express my own ideas and I am not good at communication.
Those problems will cause me cannot be a good leader and cannot manage my parents
company so I must change it. My short term goals is I am trying to application for transfer in
Fall2015 and I hope I can graduation as soon as I can. In additional, I expect that I can learn
English as well as I can because my future discourse community is English and Mandarin.
Because of my barely English, I must study harder and work harder than other people. I will
to push myself to read some stories 4 times per week and I believe that reading is a good way
to improve my English.

In conclusion, I have decided my major is business management and accounting. I know

it is very hard and a big challenging for me but I still want to do and I consider that college
education is very important and helpful for my future. I hope I can get a good GPA in my
study and learning a lot of knowledge to help me in my future jobs and careers. I will try my
best to study in the college and make a preparation to become a member of my future
community.
