Developmental Screener: Brigance

The BRIGANCE Early Childhood Screen II is a collection of quick and highly
accurate assessments and data-gathering tools to use with children in
kindergarten and first grade.
Screening can be done quickly, usually within 10-15 minutes, allowing teachers
to identify readily children who may be developmentally delayed or advanced.
Assessment items are both criterion-referenced and norm-referenced and
cover a broad sampling of a childs skills and behaviors. Key developmental
skills include:
Fine-motor and Gross-motor
Language
Academic/Cognitive
Self-help and Social-Emotional

SLO Baseline Assessment

SLOs or Student Learning Outcomes document the assessment of student
learning and are required for all teachers in the district. The baseline serves as
the pre-assessment of what knowledge students have at the beginning of the
year before extensive instruction has began. At the heart of an SLO is a
specific learning goal and a specific measure of student learning used to track
progress toward that goal.

Early Learning Assessment (ELA)

The Early Learning Assessment (ELA) for preschool teachers and the
Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA) are complementary assessments
for children ages 3 through 6. Based on the Early Learning and Development
Standards, Learning Progressions have been developed that start at age 3 and
extend to end-of kindergarten expectations. Preschool teachers are using a
partial ELA this fall and will receive the complete assessment in the spring, with
fall, 2015 as the date for full implementation. The ELA is a formative
assessment allowing teachers to monitor childrens progress through
Preschool.

ECO: Special Education

The Early Childhood Outcomes Summary Form (ECOSF) is used by preschool
special education teachers rate every preschool child with a disability using a 7point scale to document the childs progress in each of three categories. The
ECOSF captures information on childrens progress in the acquisition and use
of knowledge and skills, (including early language, communication and early
literacy), positive emotional skills (including social relationships) and the use of
appropriate behaviors to meet their needs.

ASQ-SE
Early identification of social-emotional problems is crucial, as more and more
children are experiencing poverty and other risk factors for depression, anxiety,
and antisocial behavior. With Ages & Stages Questionnaires: SocialEmotional, Second Edition (ASQ:SE-2), a highly reliable, parent-completed
tool with a deep, exclusive focus on childrens social and emotional
development, you can quickly pinpoint behaviors of concern and identify any
need for further assessment or ongoing monitoring.

Structured Oral Language Observation (SOLO)

The SOLOM is a rating scale that teachers can use to assess their students'
command of oral language on the basis of what they observe on a continual
basis in a variety of situations (class discussions, interactions before and after
class, and everyday). The teacher matches a student's language performance
in listening comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, grammar, and pronunciation to
descriptions on a five-point scale for each. The scores for individual domains
can be considered, or they can be combined into a total score with a range of
five through 25, where approximately 19 or 20 can be considered proficient.
SOLOM scores represent whether a student can participate in oral language
tasks typically expected in the classroom at his or her grade level. The SOLOM
does not require a dedicated testing situation. To complete it, teachers simply
need to know the criteria for the various ratings and observe their students'
language practices with those criteria in mind.

End of Year SLO Assessment

The SLO end of year assessment is similar if not the same as the SLO
assessment given at the beginning of the year. Data from both assessments is
compared to check for student growth. The pre-assessment sets the growth
target and the post-assessment determines if the growth target is met or
exceeded. Depending on the number of students that met or exceeded the
growth target determines a teachers rating of effective, average or ineffective.

Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA):

Language Literacy
Beginning with the 2014-15 school year, a new kindergarten readiness
assessment will replace the KRA-L. The new assessment includes ways for
teachers to measure a childs school readiness. Ohios Early Learning and
Development Standards (birth to kindergarten entry) are the basis for the new
assessment. It has six components: social skills (including social and
emotional development, and approaches toward learning), mathematics,
science, social studies, language and literacy, and physical well-being and
motor development.

SFA Roots Baseline Assessment - Q1

Success for All makes reading the cornerstone of the curriculum. For children
to succeed in school, they must be reading on grade level by the end of the
third grade and keep building reading skills through secondary school. They
also need effective teachers, so SFA includes intensive professional
development, ongoing coaching support, and data tools to give teachers
feedback on how students are learning and where they need additional
instruction or extra help. SFA involves the whole community in implementing
effective instruction that is based on the best research on what works. Success
for All makes learning fun and engaging for kids and helps teachers become
knowledgeable, skilled instructional leaders.

OTELA Ohio Test of English Language

Acquisition
State and Federal law require an annual assessment of K-12 Limited English
Proficient (LEP) students to measure their English language proficiency. The
Ohio Test of English Language Acquisition (OTELA) is the assessment used for
testing English language proficiency for Ohio LEP students in Grades K-12.

Reading Screener Diagnostic

The primary purpose of Ohios Diagnostic Assessments, which are aligned to
Ohios New Learning Standards, is to provide a tool to check the progress of
students toward meeting the standards. The Ohio Diagnostic Assessments
were developed in two formats:

Screener: measures beginning year skills

Full Measure: measures end-of-year skills

Based on the Third Grade Reading Guarantee, districts/schools must

administer a reading diagnostic assessment to all students in kindergarten
through grade three by September 30 of each school year to meet the
requirements of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee.

iReady Math/Reading Beginning of Year

Assessment
The i-Ready Diagnostic & Instruction program is a two-part product that includes online assessments
and online instruction. School or district administrators can choose to purchase the entire program to
assess math and reading skills and generate unique instruction plans for every student. But the
program is also available without the online Instruction component. The assessments include in-depth
Diagnostic Assessments and Progress Monitoring Assessments. The Diagnostic assessment will
pinpoint your students needs in reading and math down to the domain and sub-skill level by using
sophisticated adaptive logic, and a bank of thousands of test items. Progress Monitoring Assessments
are designed to be given more frequently than Diagnostic Assessments, for the purpose of quickly
getting a temperature check on your students progress. Chapter 2 in this guide can help you
prepare yourself and your students for the reading and math assessments. Once the assessments
have been completed, the Instruction component of the i-Ready program takes over, automatically
placing students in lessons targeted to their specific needs.

OAA 3R Summer/Fall/Spring
For the 2014-2015 school year, a student must reach at least a 394 on the
Grade 3 Reading Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA) to move on to the
fourth grade. If a student does not reach that score, the student may still move
on to fourth grade if they qualify for a retention exemption.
This summer, school districts across Ohio are considering how to devise their
Mid-Year Promotion Policy. This guidance document will aid in making these
important decisions by providing the legal background and additional
considerations when planning for summer reading intervention programs,
summer promotion and mid-year promotion to fourth-grade.

Math/ELA/Literacy PARCC
The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers is a consortium of
states working together to develop a set of assessments that measure whether students
are on track to be successful in college and their careers. These high quality,
computer-based K12 assessments in mathematics and English language arts/literacy
give teachers, schools, students and parents better information about whether students
are on track in their learning and for success after high school, and tools to help
teachers customize teaching and learning to meet student needs.
The PARCC assessment is based on the core belief that assessment should work as a
tool for enhancing teaching and learning. Because the assessments are closely aligned
with the new, more rigorous Common Core State Standards (CCSS), they ensure that
every child is on a path to college and career readiness by measuring what students
should know at each grade level. They also provide parents and teachers with timely
information to identify students who may be falling behind and need extra help, as well
as students who are excelling and are ready for additional challenges.

AASCD: Alternate Assessment for Students

with Significant Cognitive Disabilities
Ohios Alternate Assessment for Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities
(AASCD) is aligned to Ohios Academic Content StandardsExtended (OACSE) and designed to allow students with significant cognitive disabilities to
demonstrate their knowledge and skills in an appropriately rigorous
assessment. The AASCD will be administered by grade band (3-5, 6-8, OGT).
All students will be assessed in English language arts and mathematics.
Students in grades 5 and 8 will also be assessed in science. Students in grades
4 and 6 will also be assessed in social studies. Students taking the OGTAASCD will also be assessed in science and social studies.

Writing Diagnostic
The ODE Diagnostic Assessments are available for the 2013-2014 school year.

Social Studies/Science AIR Assessment

The Ohio science and social studies tests in computer and paper format are administered
for the first time in the spring 2015. These tests complement the computer and paper
format English language arts and mathematics tests. Additional information can be found
on the Ohio Online Portal. The Portal is your gateway to all systems and resources for
the spring 2015 Ohio science and social studies tests. It includes FAQs and resources for
students and families, teachers/test administrators, test coordinators, and technology
coordinators. Although the Portal is available to the public, several systems require users
to log in using their account information.
Ohio is administering new state tests in science and social studies operationally for the
first time in Spring 2015. American Institutes for Research (AIR) is the vendor for these
tests. Each test has two parts: part 1, performance-based assessments and part 2, endof-year tests. All districts and schools with eligible students are required to administer
both parts of the tests.

OGT - Ohio Graduation Test

Students must pass all five parts of the Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT) in order
to receive high school diplomas. The OGT are aligned to Ohio's academic
content standards, which were adopted by the State Board of Education in
English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. These
standards have been carefully designed to ensure that students are armed with
the knowledge they need to be successful in higher educational pursuits as well
as the jobs and careers of the future.
House Bill 487 updated Ohios graduation requirements to ensure that all
students are ready for success in college and work. As a result, the Class of
2017 (10th-graders in the 2014-2015 school year) will be the last students to
take the current Ohio Graduation Tests.
