Candy Solids Assessment

Geometry (60 points)

NAME:____________________
We are finally going outside today! And you get candy! But this is not playtime, we have an
assessment to take :) This is a group assessment and, as such, you will be broken into
teams.
1. What is the name of your team? (1 pt)

Each teams task is to decide on an object in the park to calculate the volume and surface
area of and actually perform those calculations, documenting each step along the way.
Each team member will have a specific role.
2. Who is taking each role for your team? (1 pt)
Roles
Director - Your job is to monitor the work of your team, making sure that numbers are
being accurately communicated, everyone is doing their part, and overall organization
_____________________________________________
Engineer - Your job is to determine and implement where and how to place all of the candy
bars on/around the object so that you can get the most accurate measurements
_____________________________________________
Computer - Your job is to keep track of all of the numbers including the dimensions of the
candy bars, the number of bars used, etc. as well as being the only person allowed to use a
calculator
_____________________________________________
Draftsman - Your job is to 1) sketch and 2) make a geometric diagram and 3) take a picture
of the object you are measuring. Make sure that you label all dimensions and any other
pertinent information
_____________________________________________
When outside, you will not be able to use rulers, string, or any other measuring
device...other than candy! Each team will receive a different bag of candy and will use the
candy bars to measure their object.
3. What type of candy did you receive? (1 pt)

4. Trace one of your candy bars below, labeling the dimensions height and width. The
thickness of the candy bar is not important. (1 pt)

Time to go outside! Make sure you have everything you think you may need!
Your team needs to decide on an object to measure. It does not need to be an entire object
(a tree), but can be a part of an object (the first few feet of the trees trunk). Your object
needs to be of a reasonable size, not tiny but not huge, and something that you can feasibly
use candy to calculate.
5. What is your object? (1 pt)

6. Looking at your object now, make two guesses:

a) The volume of your object (1 pt)

b) The surface area of your object (1 pt)

Now, time to get measuring! Use the remainder of this page and the next to perform the
tasks associated with your role. Each member will receive an individual score based on
how accurately and precisely they performed their role, and then all of your team
members scores will be combined to make one final grade that the entire team will
receive.
