Artifact Reflection Health Promotion Portfolio

University of Wisconsin Platteville

Title of Experience/Artifact:

Walk/Jog Reflection

Date Experience Completed:

Spring 2015

Describe your educational experience/artifact:

This artifact is my Walk/Jog reflection that I filled out after teaching to the fitness assessment
students. I had to teach the students how to use the Movbands, the benefits of walking and
jogging, and how to take their heart rates. Next, I ran them through Rock Port walking test that
took about 20 minutes and demonstrated how each client should be walking throughout the test
as well as, showing them proper pace they need to walk at. The reflections of each of the
teaching reflections gave me the opportunity to see how I improved from the first day to the last
day.
UW-Platteville Health Promotion Standard Alignment

I believe this artifact aligns with standard number eight Reflection- the health promoter is a
reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his/her choices and actions on
others (clients, volunteers and other professionals in the health promotion community) and who
actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally. This sample aligns with this standard
because it gave me the opportunity to see my weaknesses and strengths. It shows my
understanding of the reflection standard because I was able to reflect on if the clients were
productively engaged or not.
Health and Human Performance Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions Alignment

I believe this artifact best aligns with KS4.a. Reflects on Teaching The candidate makes an
accurate and thoughtful reflection of his/her teaching effectiveness, is aware of specific elements
of his/her teaching that contributed to successful instruction, and can offer alternative teacher
action to predict the future successes of alternate approaches. This artifact best aligns with this
KSD because I was able to reflect on my teachings from the first day to the last day. This artifact
demonstrates this KSD because I was able to see what I needed to improve on for my next day of
teaching from the feedback that I was given from the FAM instructor.
Secondary KSD:
KS1.e. DESIGNS COHERENT INSTRUCTION
KS3.a. COMMUNICATES CLEARLY AND ACCURATELY
KSD4.f. SHOWS PROFESSIONALISM
Explain what you learned about health promotion from this experience:

I learned that reflection is very important when it comes to health and human performance
because the Health promotion specialist must be able to evaluate his or her teaching styles and be
able to recognize their weaknesses and turn them into strengths. The ability to identify
weaknesses and change their ways is a must have skill when it comes to health promotion.

Explain what you learned about yourself as a prospective health promotion specialist as a result of
this experience:

With the result of this experience, I learned that being reflective on my teaching can be an
effective tool to better my future teachings. Also, I learned that I can alter teachings when I make
mistakes to improve for future teachings. Lastly, I learned if I want to be a successful health
promotion specialist, I must be able to change the way I teach for future presentations in order
for them to be effective.
