May Edition
5-6-2015

Dear Parent/Guardian,
Here we are in the month of May. This school year will shortly
come to an end. Although we only have two short months left, there is
still much work to be done. Young children can make great strides in
a short period of time, so please continue to stress the importance of
working hard in school. We will keep up our daily routines and move
forward with the last tid bits of the third grade curriculum. Continue to
read each night with your child and help them to complete the last
few months homework assignments. Make sure to check your childs
yellow folder each week and their maroon folder on a daily basis.
Thank you for your continued support.
Today the children took the PARCC (EOY) in ELA. They will test
again next Tuesday the 12th and the following Monday on the 18th in
Math (EOY). This will be the last of state wide testing for this school
year.
Memorial Day is fast approaching. Many of you are familiar with
the Wessagusset School tradition. The Memorial Day Celebration will
take place on Friday, May 22nd. I look forward to seeing many of you
there.
In math, we will soon finish up Unit Eleven. Students will be
taking the Geometry Assessment next week. Our next area of study
will be a quick unit on Time. Lessons will focus on time to the half
hour, time to the quarter hour, time to the minute, and elapsed time.
From there, we will move on to Units 13 and 14 which will focus on
Perimeter and Area.

In reading, we are ready to begin Unit Four: One of a Kind.

This unit revolves around the Big Question: What does it mean to
be unique? The weekly concepts we will focus on in this fourth unit
are, How do talents make someone unique?; What makes natures
record holders unique?; Why is it valuable to have unique interests?;
What unique traits does it take to be the first to do something?; and
What behaviors are unique to different animals? Children will be
exposed to biographies, expository text, and a folk tale throughout the
five stories. Phonics lessons within unit four will focus on irregular
plurals, r-controlled vowels, prefixes, suffixes, and syllables.
Vocabulary lessons will review unfamiliar words, unknown words, and
multiple-meaning words. Comprehension lessons within unit four will
focus on summarizing, main idea/details, cause and effect, fact and
opinion, and drawing conclusions. Convention lessons will focus on
pronouns and contractions.
I am still missing a few report card envelopes. Please send
yours in if you still have one at home. Thanks in advance.
Our class is once again in need of paper towels and tissues.
We are on our last roll and down to our last box.
Birthday wishes went out to Michael McCarthy on the 2 nd and
go out to Anthony Forster on the 19th!

Happy Mothers Day to all of the

wonderful women who work so hard and
make a difference in the lives of their
children. Take time to pamper yourself. You
deserve it!
