The intention was for our show to be informal

and relaxed and so when I asked my focus
group if they thought that the show was of
this style I was pleased to see that all four of
them agreed and said that it was, I believe
that the reason we were able to achieve this
was because we used this style through
every aspect of our show from verbal and
visual techniques. Which allowed the
informal tone to be expressed to the
audience, the reason we were able to do this
so well was from our research watching the
fashion segment from This Morning.
The next question I asked them was whether
they thought the content we had provided
was interesting, all of them answered yes. It
was vital that our live show was interesting
because if not then both the guests and the
audience would find it boring and would not
enjoy the show and without that it would be a
complete failure.
As well as the content being interesting it
was vital that all of it was relevant as well,
the focus of the show being fashion meant
that our content that we produced needed to
have some relation to this is some way. I felt
that we were very successful in doing this
and so when the focus group confirmed that
by saying; yes the content was relevant and
the guests that we had chosen were good I
was really happy.
We wanted our show to look professional like the
ones which we had gained inspiration from and
also to get the best outcome and the focus
group confirmed that the show did have a
professional look, I do feel personally however
that the show could have been better if we had
changed specific aspects of it but we worked
with what we had and produced something that I
am pretty happy with.

Having done our research into other shows that followed

the same conventions of ours I wanted to see if the focus
group thought that ours was relatable and similar to
other fashion shows. They answered that it was like
other fashion TV shows and that of next top model which
is a very successful show and therefore I was really
happy with the answer to this question.

it better, the
that they thought
could be improved, I
if we had better
would have been
to a higher

Most importantly I
wanted to know what
they thought I could
change about the live
show in order to make
majority of them said
that the green screen
agree with this in that
equipment then we
able to complete this
standard.

When it came to deciding a topic for our live studio production, we brainstormed
a variety of different ideas which we felt that we would be able to work with
easily and which we all had some sort of interest in. Once we had taken all
aspects into consideration; our target audience etc. we came to the final decision
that the base of our show would be fashion, with this being such a diverse topic
we knew that each of us would be able to find something that interested us
which we felt was important because if the presenters show curiosity and
passion in a subject then it is more likely that the audience will as well. As
mentioned the topic we had chosen is diverse so we needed to each find a focus
we did this quite simply by first off finding people who we could interview and
basing our individual sections off of this and therefore it was decided that our
show would focus on street style and careers in the fashion industry, education
and make-up to compliment your fashion choices.
However, we did find it difficult at first to think of people who we could possibly
interview and we even considered changing the topic because time was passing
and we were losing time on the planning and preparation time for our production
because obviously without guests its would be extremely difficult to produce our
scripts but ultimately produce a live show.
We resolved this situation by speaking to our peers and asking if they knew off
anyone that would be relevant and interesting to our production and we came up
with a selection of possible candidates then coming to the final decision of
Magnus Ronning, Francesca Shaw and Michelle Fletcher all people we felt would
allow us to produce appropriate entertaining content.
We knew that we wanted to create a show which appealed to late teens-early
twenties because we felt this was something that we could use to our advantage
being of similar ages to this this helped with a number of decisions but to gain
Grace Crowley

inspiration each of us researched other shows which featured fashion and

analysed the format etc. of the shows that I researched I feel that the one I
gained the most inspiration for our show from was the style and beauty segment
from `This Morning the way in which the segment is presented is informal,
relaxed and chatty all three attributes we wished to incorporate into our live
show.
I found it difficult to find other shows which were exactly the same as ours that
focused solely on fashion apart
from This Morning fashion
segment, and so I looked at chat
shows which followed the same
style that we wished to achieve
such as The Johnathon Ross
Show and Alan Carr Chatty Man
both of which are presented in an
informal and relaxed way which
makes the guests feel at ease and
sometimes allows the presenters to be a little more cheeky with the questions
they ask, getting more gossip and news that the guests should probably not be
revealing to audiences because of the level of respect and friendship that has
been created from the casualness.
The presenters of This Morning fashion segment seemed comfortable and
chilled which gave an atmosphere that felt friendly and relaxed which is very
important when it comes to interviews to get the best possible outcome from
your interviewees. Looking at this show in particular helped with deciding how
we would format, present and set-up our show and each of the interviews.
In order to gain information about our guests to ensure that we have a good
knowledge of them to create relevant questions and feed our audience with the
correct material it was vital for us to also conduct research on them and their
background. I carried out research on the guest whom I was interviewing:
Magnus Ronning, I was unable to find much secondary research on him apart
from on his agencies website: www.premiermodelmanagment.com which only
stated his measurements and other body specifications. Due to this I had to do
my own primary research which meant that I had to meet the guest and ask him
questions about him and his modelling background to gain information about him
and his modelling career this would help guide me when it came to creating my
questions.
Once we had made all of the plans and collected our research it was then time to
start rehearsing, this time would allow us to see how the show would run and if it
was going to be effective and successful. We were able to play around with the
set-up of our live show, where the cameras were going to be placed and most
importantly it allowed us to ensure that the content was entertaining and flowed
well. During the rehearsals we found that there were a few things that we
needed to change with our script such as adding introductions and making it

Grace Crowley

sound more conversational and natural so that the outcome of our show was
informal and relaxed which we intended it to be. This time was effective because
we were able to practise using the equipment which we hadnt used before such
as the vision mixer, it was vital that we all knew how to use this before it came to
the recording of our live show we needed to ensure that the right cameras and
shots were played at correct times; as people were speaking the camera is
focused on them. This job was made slightly easier by the help of the shot list
and timed script because we were able to plan ahead and know exactly which
shot was too been shown next.
Rehearsal gave us the chance to play around with the set-up of the studio, we
felt that we needed to add a few more objects to the background to make it look
more professional but also knowing where the cameras and lights were going to
be so that when it came to the live
show it didnt require much effort
because we wouldnt have much time
to mess around only having 30
minutes to record. We decided to add
relevant objects that would have
some relation to our show would be
most suited so a mannequin and
clothes rail possibly a sewing
machine if we were able to source
one. It was also a chance for us to
familiarise ourselves with the script
so that we felt comfortable with the
questions, if we felt comfortable with the questions it is more likely that the
guest would as well.
When it came to the recording of the show each of us in the group knew our jobs
for each part of the live show something we had completed during the preproduction, for recording it was required that we had our location interview
burned onto a CD which would make the process of editing easier. However this
was one part that we failed to complete in time for recording, it didnt cause a
big issue it would just mean more editing for us which was something that we
were able to cope with having used premiere pro many times before. All of our
guests were told about times and dates before-hand and we had given them the
opportunity to quickly run through the questions so that they knew what to
expect whilst we were setting up the studio which didnt take long as we knew
where everything was going etc.
We had planned to borrow a clothes rail off of another student in the class but
she failed to turn up on time and we couldnt keep our guests waiting as they
had other priorities and so therefore the group made the decision to go ahead
with the show without the clothes rail, I feel that that might have made a
difference to the background in making it look more professional but ultimately it
didnt affect the content of the show which was the most important thing in this
whole process.

Before recording began Sarah, our teacher told us that the auto-cue was playing
up and so we would have to create cue cards because having the script in our
hands wouldnt look good, not having much time we made the decision to use
IPads. Each of the presenters would hold an IPad with the script on it we felt this
would suit the style of our show as we wanted it to look modern and up to date
and with most teens having the use of one we felt it was relevant and also
helpful for us as we werent completely revised on our script.
The recording all ran really smoothly apart from a slight glitch at the beginning
with the positioning of camera 2 which meant that we had to re-start the opening
on the show, I believe that this was quite effective in the long run because it
made us feel more comfortable and relaxed as we knew what to expect.
When it came to my turn to use the vision mixer I was quite nervous because I
knew how vital it was for me to be pressing the right buttons at the right time
but the shot list was helpful in guiding me in this and once I had done it a few
times I got into a flow and it was ran as planned. Overall the live show ran really
well and we were pleased with the outcome, if we had the opportunity I would
have changed the green screen and the lighting, I would have used a one that
isnt made of fabric because this made it hard when it came to editing as there
were different shades of green and creases in the fabric but being the first time
using the green screen and Chroma key properly I felt that it was of an
acceptable standard.
Managing our time as a team was an aspect that we completed well, we knew
exactly what was happening at each part of the live show and before-hand
during the planning and location shoot which ultimately made everything run
smoothly because everything was in place before filming it ran smoothly and
more importantly the guests knew exactly which dates and times filming was to
take place. If there was any decision that had to be made then we would make it
as a team in the hope that each of us was happy, we all had similar outcomes of
how we wanted the show to look so there wasnt any disagreements when it
came to that aspect. The only times there would be disagreements would be
when we hadnt planned ahead and things went wrong for example on our
location shoot it was a requirement that we used multi-cameras with it being a
multi-camera production however we only had one camera which I had provided
so Jerome had to go back to college and collect another camera.
The target audience for our show; both females and males late teens-early
twenties meant that we thought that it was best we made our show informal and
so therefore planned to use informal and more colloquial language to create a
relaxed and conversational atmosphere. We wanted to follow the same
conventions of a chat show because it was most relatable to what we hoped to
create so shows such as the Johnathon Ross show was helpful in finding was to
present our own and creating questions for our show, we wanted our questions
to be entertaining but we also wanted it be effective in gaining information about
the our guests.

Grace Crowley

The vocabulary that we wanted to use in our live show would be easily
understandable to the ages who we are aiming to, because we want it to have a
casual vibe and be easy to watch without much effort something that can be
enjoyed the vocabulary used was easy to understand so that they could be
engaged in it because if there was no understanding then they are likely to zone
out and stop watching because it will become boring.
When It came to structuring our questions, we used the research that we had
completed to create relevant questions such as you have been modelling for 8
months, do you still enjoy it? rather than how long have you been modelling,
do you still enjoy it? this shows the audience that the presenters know what
they are talking about and are informed on the subject, it also shows the guest
that they are important and makes them feel as if they are in a professional
environment. Knowing that we didnt have a lot of time and also not wanting to
bore the audience we made the questions to the point but also allowed us to
gain as much possible information from them.
As mentioned the language that we used was informative, this style of language
worked best with the target audience, presenters and guests in mind because it
was style that everyone was comfortable with as it a way that most of us use in
our everyday lives and so therefore feels natural in an unnatural environment;
one that they arent used to being in (in front of the cameras) the language and
vocabulary used showed a level of seriousness but the way that they are
presented it was relaxed.
In order to make sure the show was consistent all of the language used was
informal from start to finish because this means that the correct atmosphere is
allowed to be built up and carried out throughout the whole process of the show
also making it have a professional feel. We ensured this by agreeing that this
was they style so when I came to write the script I was able to follow the same
conventions of that of other informal and chatty scripts. To keep the show natural
and relaxed rather than putting on accents that we werent comfortable with we
used our natural accents but appropriate for a live show and so there for
composed and professional, much like this the tone of voice it was unintimidating
as this would be most effective in making the guests and audience feel at ease
and enjoy the show at a maximum level.
The pace of delivery was important when it came to delivering our content to the
audience because if it was too fast then they would struggle to take in the
information and remain engaged and slowly and clearly was the best way to
present it. Remaining calm and collected meant that this was possible, we were
reading our script at a pace that we were comfortable with so that we didnt
mess up and make mistakes. If any mistakes were made then we regained
composure and repeated the question because then when we came to edit it we
were able to edit out and producing something which flowed well.
As mentioned the reason that we choose the style of presenting was because we
thought this was most appropriate to our audiences and so therefore we made

Grace Crowley

sure that all aspects of our show including all of the verbal techniques to be most
appealing to them and easily understand.
The tone that we decided on for our show was informal and so this was the style
that we wished to reflect throughout the whole of our show in order for it to be
consistent and so therefore when it came to the visual effects this had to be
carried through. Therefore for our live show we decided that we would be
wearing clothes that we feel comfortable as this will ultimately make us feel
more comfortable and at ease and in conjunction will mean that our guests are
relaxed, which is the atmosphere that we want to create.
The clothes will be fashionable and we will aim to show trends which are
currently popular/trending as a way of promoting and providing inspiration for
our customers. Because there is three of us who will be participating in this live
show, each of us will aim to look slightly different and express their own fashion
style so we can appeal to a mass audience with a variety of different styles. The
body language we used needed to look as if we were engaged with what the
guests are saying so sitting with our body facing towards them with our arms
placed on our laps an open expression, this will also make the audience feel that
we are engaged with what is going on, we didnt however want it to look
unnatural so we sat in positions that we felt comfortable with.
Making natural expressions towards the questions allowed them to show that we
were actively listening to them, nodding heads and laughing etc. this was the
only movement that was used during the production. Facial expressions were
also natural because this was most effective for our show, so for example in my
interview with Magnus Ronning I was laughing at what he has said in reaction to
him.
The whole purpose of the interview was to gain relevant and informative
information from our guests this would require us to create questions that would
allow us to gain the best possible outcome and answers. In order to formulate
questions we completed various types of research into the different question
styles and techniques that are used in different interviews. The type of interview
that followed the conventions that we wanted to achieve were shows such as
The Johnathon Ross show and the way in which the questions were presented in
This Mornings fashion segment also allowed us to formulate our questions to suit
the style we intended for Sur le point.
In order to make it entertaining and mix things up slightly we decided to use a
variety of different question types, but mainly the questions that I choose to use
in my interview were open questions. The main reason for me making this
decision was because open questions give the interviewee the opportunity to
ponder allowing them to express themselves and their opinions on whatever
subject is being raised.
When it came to putting our questions into a script we found that after we had
completed a rehearsal there was a few things that we needed to change to make
it more conversational and feel more natural as it seemed a bit mechanical and

Grace Crowley

so we as the presenters werent comfortable in what we were saying, in order to

correct this we went through the script and spoke as if we would every day and
then made the changes to the script, the outcome was more effective and suiting
to the style which we as a group were achieving.
The way in which we structured our script and questions was by introducing the
subject of the questions, the subject in this case is modelling. When did you
start modelling, was it something that you always wanted to do, do you enjoy it?
Once I had established the subject then my main intention was to become
ensuring that my interviewee feels comfortable and to do this I will add
compliments did you ever think you would be as successful as you I am not
directly saying you are successful but I have drawn out that he is and have
pointed it out. Once he felt comfortable in the surrounding then he is more likely
to open up.
Using questions that allowed me to find out his fashion influences and more
about the subject so that our live show is successful in being informative about
Fashion; Street style. I rounded up with a suggestive question that allows for a
conversation to end on and summarise the subject. What do you think is to come
for you and the future? What is your view on the future of street style?
For the preparation for the live show the most important thing that we had to get
right was client liaison, we informed the guests of when and where they would be
needed in an advanced time so that they were able to make it and if not then we
were able to make changes. And sending them the questions so they were
prepared in time for the live show. The contact I made with my guest was
through email and through person to person with the help of Jerome the other
member of the group.
We were using all of our own
footage so will not have any
issues regarding copyright, the
footage we will use we will
have filmed on location
ourselves of peoples/strangers
street style with their
permission. Something that we
didnt complete however was
contracts which meant that we
havent got proof of the guests
agreeing to completing the live
show apart from in the email where Magnus my guest agreed to.
Each of us completed roles throughout the production as this what we required,
as mentioned before this was decided when we created the pre-production which
roles each of us was going to complete so each of us knew by the time it came to
rehearsals what we were going to be doing in order for things to run effectively.
We completed a role list that we could follow as shown below. We each followed
the roles because if we hadnt then the role production would have gone wrong.
Grace Crowley

Having not used some of the equipment before it was important that we made
time to ensure that we all knew what we were doing when it came to completing
the different roles, we were able to do this when completing rehearsals Sarah
was able to show us how to use all of the equipment. Having used the cameras
before we each knew where the best positions for the cameras would be; having
one camera which focuses solely on the presenter, another one with would be on
the guest or second presenter depending on the section of the show and then a
final third camera which would sit in between these two cameras at a wide angle,
showing all of the background and both presenters. Having three cameras was
something that we required because this was to be a multi-camera production,
however it was best for us because it

The lighting was something which we organised together as a group during
rehearsals so we could set this up straight away when it came to filming day. The
graphics generation was something that each of us completed during the editing
of each of our shows so each of us could put our own stamp on it, we did
however follow similar conventions to each other. Keeping it simple we knew that
the transition screen sur le point was going to be on a black background with a
classic font; times new roman but each of us did this slightly different.

We intended to create a show which followed the same conventions to a fashion

TV show, and therefore content of our show would be fashion. Once we decided
as a group what our content was going to be and what each of us was going to
talk about we were able to go ahead with the production of the show. All of the
content that we featured in the live show I feel was very relevant, I spoke to
Magnus Ronning, model and asked him about his career, his fashion influences
and what his thoughts were on street style.
I feel that the questions that I asked him were all relevant and that I used a
variety of different question types such as open questions, closed questions,
suggestive questions etc. I feel that my use of suggestive question allowed there
to be a different atmosphere to be created quite tense as the question I
presented him with; models are known for coming obsessed with the way that
they look was quite controversial, not wanting to offend him I did mention
before filming that it was purely for entertainment factor that I featured this
question and was not to offend him in anyway which he was completely
accepting of and when it came to the recording he answered in response to the
question giving his personal opinion which is what I required.

Grace Crowley

Having done my research on him I felt that this allowed me to create questions
which were relevant and informed giving a professional look and feel to the show
because it looked to both him and the audience that I knew what I was talking
about which is something that is very important when it comes to being a
successful presenter.
We agreed that the style of our show was going to be informal and relaxed as
this was what we felt would be best suited, my presenting style I feel was
informal and my main intention from the start was to make sure that Magnus felt
comfortable; I used a question which complimented him and with compliments I
feel that they allow you to feel more at ease with the person that you are sat
with because you feel as if you are on a level with them. Once he felt
comfortable I feel that he relaxed and so therefore answered the questions as if
he was talking to his friend or someone that he knew and it was as if we were
having a conversation, good because what we wanted to do was to use colloquial
language that you would everyday as this would make you feel more relaxed in
front of the camera.
