Power Circuit Breaker

Low Voltage Air
Visual and Mechanical Inspections

Inspect the frame, covers and conductors for corrosion and paint condition.
Inspect bus connections and finger clusters for signs of overheating. Inspect
secondary disconnect contacts for alignment, damage and spring pressure.
Inspect the insulating supports, bushings, operating links and barriers for
contamination and evidence of deterioration.
Inspect the operating mechanism for loose, broken or missing parts, binding and
excessive wear.
Check mechanical operation by manual closing and tripping. Verify proper
latching and smooth operation.
Breaker shall be electrically closed and opened several times to assure free
movement of all parts and correct mechanical sequence.
Inspect main and arcing contacts for condition, travel, alignment,
synchronization, sequencing wipe and pressure. Clean and burnish.
Verify operation of cell interlocks, undervoltage trip (if exists), operations
counter, the close-open indicator, anti-pumping relay and the spring charge
indicator.
Control wiring connections shall be checked and tightened.

Mechanical Work and Services

Clean the frame, insulating supports, bushings, and conductors of the breaker.
Arc chutes shall be removed and checked for loose, missing or broken grids.
Clean and lubricate the operating mechanism, as necessary, per manufacturers
guidelines.
Primary disconnect fingers shall be cleaned, inspected for proper alignment, and
lubricated with an oxidation inhibiting grease.
Clean and lubricate secondary finger contacts, check for wear and proper connection.

Electrical Tests

Measure contact resistance for each phase with a micro-ohmmeter.

Measure insulation resistance at the appropriate test value, each pole to ground,
between phases and across open contacts of each phase with a DC test potential.
Verify proper electrical operation including spring charge motor, closing operation and
shunt trip.
OPTION: With breaker in the test position, verify electrical operation by control
switch and protective relays.
Test the trip unit by secondary current injection, if applicable.

OPTION: Each phase of breaker shall be primarily injected utilizing a low voltage,
high current test source to determine ir breaker trip characteristics are in compliance
with the manufacturers time current curves.
