Course Reflection
My semester in English 106 has been an exciting one filled with learning. The entire
course was helpful in learning new concepts, setting and achieving goals, and becoming a better
writer overall. Each unit had its specific requirements and goals that tied into the goals for the
course. I learned new concepts and how to use them in my writing and for everything else.
Each unit had its own goals and all together ICap had goals for the overall course that we
had to achieve in order to show that we comprehended everything taught to us. In unit one where
we wrote a mystery narrative, our course goals followed what we were learning in class. We had
to explore a familiar genre, specifically mystery. We focused on the type of mystery writing and
its topics. This unit also helped us by giving us practice in creative writing and a little bit of
research, and of course helped us to open up our creativity and help us for future assignments.
When we moved on to the next unit of writing a research paper, the course goals changed. In this
unit we had to learn how to use Purdue library resources. We had to research, evaluate, and
properly cite our sources. This assignment also required that we practice analyzing and write
within our field, and overall be able to demonstrate that we showed organization and style. In
unit three, the game design, our course goals changed for the assignment we had. We explored a
new genre, we had to write and design for a new audience, we had to practice collaboration and
team-building, and lastly, show a creative approach to visual rhetoric and design. Our last unit
wanted us to be able to take a previous assignment and write for a new audience and purpose. We
had to learn how to write for speaking and practice public speaking. All of this also included

learning how to use audio and sound technology. Lastly, for our digital portfolio we had to reflect
on the whole course. It showed us how to think about online writing and how to use visual
design as well as use the basic elements of design. Each unit had its own specific course goals,
and each unit had ICap goals that were all relatively similar. The ICap goals we had to follow
included: critical thinking, knowledge of conventions, writing process and rhetorical knowledge.
We also needed to learn how to use technology which was more apparent in the last two units
and the final project.
My overall impression of this course is good. I enjoyed coming to class everyday and
learning. English and writing have never been one of my favorite subjects, however, this class
made it exciting to write for the different units. I liked how each unit required us to do something
different so it didnt always seem like we were just writing papers. I think all the activities we
did in class enhanced our learning and was relevant to what we were working on. In the future, I
hope that this course is taught the same way. I think that everything in this course was well
thought out and little improvement is needed. I hope, though that the computer lab problems will
be fixed in the future and if not, it doesnt hurt to have a backup plan for when they arent
working. I enjoyed my time in this class with everything that we did, as well as the instructor and
my fellow classmates.
