Research Outline

I.

Attention/ Introduction
A. Attention Getter
B. Credibility
1. If we recycled every plastic bottle we
used, we would keep 2 billion tons of plastic out of landfills
2. An estimated 90% of recycled glass is
used to make new container
3. By recycling more than 229,000 tons of
plastics annually, we can save enough energy to power
almost 116,000 houses for one year
4. By recycling more than 57,000 tons of
steel cans, we reduce greenhouse gases equivalent to
taking approximately 21,000 cars off the road each year
5. In 2003, 54 billion cans were recycled,
saving the energy equivalent of 15 million barrels of crude
oil, which is America's entire gas consumption for one day
C. Preview/ Thesis
1. I would like to explain to you why
recycling is beneficial to everyone and also the
environment
Transition: The amount of trash we are putting in the waste instead of
recycling affects us significantly.

II.

Need

A. Recycling will benefit us because less resources will

have to be used
B. If the recycling industry flourishes, then more jobs
will be open. Unemployment rate will decrease
C. By recycling more than 57,000 tons of steel cans,
we reduce greenhouse gases equivalent to taking approximately
21,000 cars off the road each year
D. Inoculation: A lot of people dont own a recycling
bin or a system in their house. Adding a bin and making it a habit
of recycling will help
Transition: Not only does recycling reduce the amount of waste and
greenhouse gases, it will benefit with the growing unemployment rate

III.

Satisfaction
A. There are different materials you could recycle
1. Plastic
2. Steel
3. Glass
4. Tires
B. You can add separate trash bins to sort waste to
rooms, kitchens, and classrooms
Transition: You may think that recycling does not do much, but it
provides more than just additional resource.

IV.

Visualization
A. Recycling provides more than 85,000 jobs
B. Recycling reduces the amount of greenhouse gases
C. Recycling helps reduce the size of dump sites
D. We can save enough energy to power almost
116,000 houses for one year
E. Generates over $4 billion a year
Transition: Overall, recycling is just a small addition to our daily lives.
Although it is small, it has a huge impact on everyone else.

V.

Action/ Conclusion
A. Review: Today I spoke to you about all the benefits
that recycling has on our environment and economy
B. Im asking that everyone starts recycling because it
only benefits us.
C. Closure: Adding recycling to our daily lives is such a
small addition. Just having separate trash cans for waste and
recycle will not be a burden.
