As the English colonies in North America became well established in the mid
1600’s, England found that they would be very beneficial to the mother country. The
colonies played an important role in the expansion of England’s growing empire, and
provided a step ahead in global competition and trade. Parliament decided that the
colonies in North America were to supply raw materials to England in exchange for
English manufactured goods. In other words, the colonies were meant to serve the
empire. Under this Mercantilist theory, the first of the Navigation Acts was passed by
