Annotated Bibliography: The Importance of Leadership

Chand, Smriti. What is the Importance of Leadership in an Organization? n.d

The author of this article believes that companies may not necessarily compete by means
of their products but rather by the means of their leadership. Better employees result from better
leaders and the combination results in better products. To get things done in a corporation it is
import for management to put forth leadership. Teamwork is a very important part of the
business world and is essential for the completion of goals. Managers must influence their team
in order to get the work done to achieve those goals.
I like this article because it talks about the fatal outcome when management fails to
provide leadership. Leadership is the basis for any good company. Ensuring a good positive
workplace ensures that all the work will get done and get done in the right fashion. When
managers dont put forward good leadership skills its easy for things to fall apart.

Hill, Catey. What Makes an Effective Leader? NY Daily News 14 Jul. 2009.
Some say great leaders are born, not made, is the opening sentence of this article. The
goal of this article is to offer strategies to help strengthen the leadership capabilities to those who
are not the born leaders. A few of the suggested approaches are being prepared for
commitment, assessing personal strengths and weaknesses, knowing the organization, and
developing a vision with solid goals. The author explains why these tactics are so important to
strengthening your leadership core as well as how the people you are leading are likely to
respond. This article puts a lot of emphasis on developing a leadership style that works for your
team. It is important to understand the willingness and ability of the team in order to choose the
most useful leadership technique.
Leadership would be nothing without the necessary skills and education, which is why
this article is important. Not everyone is born with a natural skill to lead and direct others. It is
important to learn and build yourself as a leader before taking over a position in which leadership
is necessary. This article gives a brief understanding of some of the most important strategies to
practice and can give an individual a better understanding on how to achieve the end goal they a
working toward.

Lautzenheiser, Tim. Developing Student Leadership. Interview by Donna Schwartz.

Bam! Radio. N.p
Time Lautzenheiser is a very well-known name in the music education industry. He is a
composer, director, clinician, and author so this interview is all about his book Developing
Student Leadership, which pertains to a band room setting. Tim is a strong believer that student
leadership is a necessity and not a luxury. Things such as setting the stage before a concert and
laying out all the chairs is something that students can easily do. When students take the
initiative it frees up the time of the director so he can do all the necessary things he has to get

done. Tim also explains that the information in his book can be applied to anyone; athletes,
clubs, faculty meetings.
I would use this a source for my paper because its all about student leadership, which I
think sometimes people overlook. Youre never too young to start practicing and learning
leadership skills. Its important that students know the powerful effect that their leadership can
bring to the classroom. As Tim mentioned, if students step up and get things done on their own it
allows the teacher to complete all the necessary tasks that they need to.

Mills, D. Quinn. Leadership: How to Lead, How to Live. Waltham, MA: MindEdge
Press, 2005.
Throughout the book, Leadership: How to Lead, How to Live, the author goes into great
detail about the meaning of leadership and the importance of ethics. D. Quinn Mills defines
leadership as a process by which one person influences the thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors of
others, without it groups can easily fall into conflict because people see things in different ways
and lean towards different solutions. While leadership is supposed to be for the greater good
sometimes people use leadership for the wrong reasons, as a way to exploit others. Mills used
Hitler as an example to explain this leadership style. Hitler was a great leader with a lot of
followers but he used his power for evil, people often use this tactic in business as a way to
benefit themselves rather than the group as a whole. The danger of people using leadership for
bad reasons is why Mills encourages that ethics are important for leaders to hold. This book
describes ethics as the inner compass that directs a person toward what is right and fair, and
that with that compass one can be sure that leadership qualities will not end with evil intentions.
This book would be a good source to include in my paper because it clearly presents the
definition of leadership and why it is so important. This book also offers a good explanation
about essential qualities that leaders need to possess in order to be successful.

Prive, Tanya. Top 10 Qualities That Make a Great Leader. Forbes 19 Dec. 2012.
Honesty, the ability to delegate, communication, a sense of humor, confidence,
commitment, a positive attitude, creativity, intuition, and the ability to inspire are the ten
qualities that the author wrote about in this article. The main focus in this article is business and
how all of these characteristics should be portrayed by the leader for a positive work
environment.
This article is written for people in the business setting to inspire those around them to
work harder and create a more positive work environment and not as a way to better themselves
as individuals. When it comes to leadership it is important to gain the respect of your peers and
be an influential worker that way people want to follow you and not just feel like they have to.
Being a leader isnt about having power but having positive persuasion on those around you and
that is why this article would be a great source for a paper dealing with the importance of
leadership.

Pujari, Saritha. What is the Importance of Leadership in any Organization? n.d

This essay highlights a few facts that pertain to the importance of leadership. The writer
briefly touches upon five main facts in particular: leaders help influence the behaviors of others,
help followers fulfil their needs, help introduce required changes, help to effectively solve
conflict, and help with training and development.
This source would easily fit in my paper because the overall main point is that when
leaders follow these guidelines people will react in a positive way. When it comes to a business it
is crucial that whoever is in charge creates a positive, work enforced environment because
otherwise things wouldnt get done. It greatly highlights the topic of the importance of
leadership.

Walton, Alice. The Dark Side of Leadership. Forbes 07 Feb. 2013.

This is an article all about bullying bosses in the workplace. A study shows that the
victims of bullying bosses are not the only ones affected but the coworkers as well, creating a
negative work environment for the entire office. Office bullying is defined as subordinates
perceptions of the extent to which supervisors engage in the sustained display of hostile verbal
and nonverbal behaviors, excluding physical contact, and is classified as a dysfunctional type of
leadership.
This is a good source because its important that bosses, managers, and other authority
figures to learn about this negative type of leadership. Being in charge requires a balance
between giving direction and understanding the needs of those around you. A harsh leadership
style creates a negative work environment which in turn can affect the company as a whole. \

Why Study Leadership? Jepson School of Leadership Studies. n.d

This is an article from the University of Richmond Jepson School of Leadership Studies.
It highlights that leadership is not just a position but also a process and a relationship between
people. This school aims to educate its students to think critically, communicate effectively, and
anticipate change, qualities that are a necessity it todays democracy.
As quoted in the article, Change is certain. Leadership ensures that change is
intentional, as a leader its important to take initiative when issues arise to ensure the resulting
outcome is that of the groups decision and not a consequence from a lack of communication.
This is a good source because without the teaching of leadership it would be a greater challenge
for people to come together and work as one which is an essential part of life.
