4 Important code content

1. Responsibilities
Important points are:
. relative responsibilities of the manufacturer and the purchaser;
. the recognized role of the independent inspection organization;
. the technical requirements and options that can be agreed between
manufacturer and purchaser;
. the way in which the certificate of code compliance is issued and who
takes responsibility for it.
2. Vessel design
Important points are:
. details of the different construction categories addressed by the vessel
code;
. knowledge of the different classifications of welded joints;
. knowledge of prohibited design features (mainly welded joints).
3. Materials of construction
Codes contain information about materials for pressurized components of
the vessel such as:
. materials that are referenced directly by the code these are subdivided
into plate, forged parts, bar sections, and tubes;
. the codes requirement for other (non-specified) materials, in order that they
may be suitable for use as permissible materials;
. any generic code requirements on material properties such as carbon
content, UTS, or impact value;
. specific requirements for low temperature applications.
4. Manufacture, inspection, and testing
The relevant areas (in approximate order of use) are:
. requirements for material identification and traceability;
. NDT of parent material;
. assembly tolerances (misalignment and circularity);
. general requirements for welded joints;
. welder approvals;
. production test plates;
. the extent of NDT on welded joints;
. acceptable NDT techniques;
. defect acceptance criteria;
. pressure testing;
. content of the vessels documentation package.
