Subject: Math Perimeter and Area

Objectives
SWBAT
Know Perimeter is the distance around a closed figure
Know Perimeter of a figure can be found by adding all
the sides
Know that Area has a length and a width. Area is
measured in square units such as square inches, square
feet or square meters.
Find the area of a square or rectangle by multiply the
length by the width.

Education Standards Addressed:

SWBAT
CCSS.MATH. 4.MD.A.3
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in
real world and mathematical problems. For example, find
the width of a rectangular room given the area of the
flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a
multiplication equation with an unknown factor.

Student Guide -

Information/Mini lesson: (Give and/or demonstrate necessary information.) 10 minutes

Access background knowledge/pre-assessment:
1. Ask student to write a prompt in their math journals, to draw a picture of a
Perimeter and a Picture of Area, explaining both in words.
2. Go over an Anchor Chart with the whole class, definition of area and perimeter
and formulas
Math

Vocabulary:
addition
area; is the number of squares units needed to cover a region
multiplication
perimeter; is the distance around a figure
Area = length x width (A=lxw)
Perimeter = add all size of square or rectangle to get your perimeter
P=__+__+__+__

Materials Needed:
Resources Needed:
1. Math journals
2. Pencils
3. Colored pencils
4. Anchor chart
5. Marker
6. Grid Paper
7. Geoboards
8. rubber bands
9. Area and perimeter
worksheet
10.Exit ticket worksheet

Direct Teaching Model to the class on how to find the perimeter of a shape and how to
find the areas in a region. Provide Anchor chart for visuals of Area and Perimeter
formulas. Students will then be divided into guided math groups where they will work
on activities that will be student centered to figure out the area and perimeter.
Students will be divided into guided math groups to work on finding the perimeter and
area
1. High group will create their dream house
SS will outline their dream house by drawing the outside walls. Dream
house should be a compound figure with all right angles.
SS will partition your dream house into rooms. Each room must be a
rectangle.
SS will label and color each room
SS will find and record the area of each room.
SS will add the area of all of your rooms to find the total area of your dream
house.
2. Medium group will make different size squares using geoboards to get the
perimeter and area
SS make different size of squares with a rubber band (no slanted lines)
SS will count each space between the dots to get the perimeter.
SS will draw the square showing area and perimeter.
3. Low group will work with cheese cracker worksheet to figure out perimeter and
area of squares and rectangles.
Using cheese crackers, ss will measure the area and perimeter of each
shape
One cracker is equal to one inch
SS will figure out the area and perimeter of different size squares and
rectangles
Assessments;
SS will be able to find the perimeter and the areas, and will show the work

Exit ticket- Find the Perimeter, Find the area.
