Ancient Greek God, Goddess, or Creature Research Paper and Presentation

What am I learning and why?


As you already know, students in the state of California are expected to become
proficient in several areas within reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The goal of
this unit is for students to work towards mastering the standards listed below by
researching and presenting an assigned Ancient Greek god, goddess or creature.
Reading: Synthesize the content from several sources or works by a single author
dealing with a single issue; paraphrase the ideas and connect them to other
sources and related topics to demonstrate comprehension.
Writing: Write expository compositions including research reports that convey
information and ideas from primary and secondary sources accurately and
coherently.
Writing: Use appropriate conventions for documentation in the text, notes, and
bibliographies by adhering to those in style manuals (use MLA style).
Speaking: Deliver expository presentations: b. convey information and ideas from
primary and secondary sources accurately and coherently.
Speaking: Use props, visual aids, etc. to enhance the appeal and accuracy of a
presentation
Speaking: Produce concise notes
Speaking: Choose effective verbal and non-verbal techniques (voice, gesture, eye
contact)
What is the assignment?
A one-page research paper on an Ancient Greek God/Goddess followed by a narrative
oral presentation of his or her god/goddess.
Research papers should include the following criteria:
Uses at least three separate primary/secondary sources
Correctly follows MLA format (including a works cited page)
Organization: Information is conveyed accurately and coherently (see rubric)
Content: Includes key topics listed on rubric (see rubric)
Oral presentations should include the following criteria:
Presentation is given as a first-person narrative from your god, goddess, or
creatures perspective.

Organization: Information is conveyed accurately and coherently (see rubric)


Content: Includes key topics on rubric (see rubric)
Uses visual aids/props to enhance their presentation

Specific Tasks and Due Dates

Research Paper
Task 1: Bring in one source for your assigned god/goddess/creature
research.

print. If you choose an internet source make sure you
have the web address.
Task 2: A complete outline of your research paper.

Oral Presentation
Task 1: A complete set of concise notes written on index cards.

Task 2: A proposal and sketch of your prop detailing how it will be
created.
