Comp H.5 NAA Standards for Physical Activity

Instructions: Using the new NAA Standards for Physical Activity (www.naaweb.org) discuss
how your program can meet these.
Using the NAA Standards for Physical Activity found in www.naaweb.org, I feel my
program have met these standards in various ways. Furthermore, after reviewing the NAA
Standards for Physical Activity, I have created a proposal for my supervisor and school age
team for training staff and make sure they are aware of these standards. Training will
ensure staff understanding and implementation of these standards at all sites in our
organization. These standards will be included in our next training, conducted in fall 2015,
in one of our training sessions.
My program does offers at least 30 minutes for morning program and 30 minutes for
afternoon program time to physical activity. My program has the following areas designed
from the school to use daily: gymnasium, cafeteria, playground, black top, baseball field,
and soccer field. I have ample space for physical activity to be used daily, both indoors and
outdoors. In fact, this time is one of my favorite because my children love playing large and
small group games and its a time that rarely I have any behavior problems. If anything lots
of teachable moments occur during this time in my program.
Beside the time we have set aside for physical activity, I have other times available for
children to do physical activities or active play. I do allow my children to be active during
center time and free choice which its an additional time for them to be active, especially
during cold weather and winter season. Each physical activity has alternative choices for
children who needs a break such as books, puzzles, are card games. Most children who
chose to take a break returns to play after a couple minutes. I am very intentional during
physical activities. I have goals and objectives that teach or are focus in one or more core
values such as caring, honesty, responsibility, respect, or teamwork. At times, I give
challenges for my children to promote teamwork or life skills. Before, during and/or after
physical activities a quick debrief is conducted about things learned/focused on and things
we need to work on as a group.

As a staff, I receive resources and training about leading and teaching children during
physical activities. Its my responsibility to promote and provide diverse ways to keep my
children engage during physical activities. I have taken advantage of some resources given
in my program. For example, I have received so many different handouts, books, articles of
group games. I took these and placed them in a table and asked children to write their
favorite games, least favorite, and desire to learn in a piece of paper. Then I made a couple
lists using this information. After months using these lists, I have made a binder with a
children friendly version of group games used as an alternative guide. Children use this
guide to suggests games all the time and new games are added too.
