Writers Notebook 5/6/15
4/6 1. Describe the content and structure you plan to use in your
reviews abstract.
I plan to use an Indicative structure because the articles are
somewhat unrelated. Some are about cancer while others are on the
early onset of puberty or child growth. Some have child test subjects
and others have buffalo or rat test subjects. It seems that we should be
using an indicative style because of the wide range of studies that we
are using but the prompt says to use an informative style.
2. Write sample direct and indirect references for figures in your
review.
a. Direct Figure 1 shows the relative IGF-1 levels before an after
consuming milk from genetically enhanced cattle.
b. Indirect IGF-1 levels increased in young children aged 4-8
after consuming milk from genetically enhanced cattle. (Figure 1)
4/22 Partners analyze the sample cover letters on Titanium.
1. Does each use adequate evidence to support claims?
2. What else about the portfolio does the author analyze?
3. How do they organize the discussion of SLOs? How do you plan
on doing it?
4. What kind of tone, style, and format does each author use? To
what extent is each effective
1. They provide adequate evidence while specifically mentioning
which SLO is being fulfilled.
2. The first one highlights the differences in each revision, and how
those differences prove that they have learned the student
learning outcomes. The second one mentions papers they did not
revise, saying that they showed the SLOs already.
3. The first one organized them in increasing writing skill
throughout the semester. The second organized it in a similar
way and mentioned that it was not necessarily in chronological
order. I think I want to structure it with the large revised paper
first, and then add the supplemental papers to help address any
poorly supported SLOs.
4. I think the tone of the first one is more effective. They specifically
show how they improved, comparing and contrasting previous
work. The second one didnt mention improvement and stated
that their original assignments were adequate enough to satisfy
the SLOs
