Lesson Topic Story Literary Elements
WV CSOs
ELA.10.R.C2.1 - determine the meaning of multiple-meaning words and
phrases as they are used in a literary text, including figurative and
connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word
choices on meaning and tone.
NATIONAL STANDARDS
NCTE 3 - Students apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret,
evaluate, and appreciate texts. They draw on their prior experience, their
interactions with other readers and writers, their knowledge of word meaning
and of other texts, their word identification strategies, and their
understanding of textual features.
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES/STUDENT OUTCOMES
Students will display knowledge of literature story elements by completing
an activity reviewing the elements.
MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK
Overall Time 50 minute lesson
Time Frame20 min. introduction of Story Literature Elements PowerPoints
25 min. student review activity
5 min. closing questions
STRATEGIES
Teacher led discussion, independent practice, and guided instruction.
DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION/ADAPTATIONS/INTERVENTIONS
The lesson will incorporate audio, visual, and written portions to address
various learning abilities and preferences. Students will be assisted while
working on their Elements worksheet.

PROCEDURES
Introduction/Lesson Set: Introduction to Story Elements with PowerPoint as
an aid.
Body & Transitions:

Discuss the various literary story elements and the plot diagram.
Ask students to give examples of various elements.
Hand out review worksheets to students.
Explain instructions for the assignment.
Give students 25 minutes to complete the worksheets.
Aid and observe students.

Closure

Answer any questions students may have and review what was
achieved.

ASSESSMENT
Diagnostic: I will assess students prior knowledge by asking them what each
literary element is before revealing the answer on the PowerPoint.
Formative: I will observe students as they complete their papers to assess
whether or not they are meeting the objective.
Summative: In my closing, I will ask students to think about the various
portions of a storys basic plot and answer that on their worksheets.

EXTENDED ACTIVITIES
If Student Finishes Early: Ask students to work on other classroom related
work.
If Lesson Finishes Early: Ask students to create five questions to ask other
students about modern day examples of literary elements.

If Technology Fails: If technology fails I will lecture on the review material


briefly while still asking students questions to assess their knowledge of the
text.
POST-TEACHING
Reflections
I felt that the lesson went well. I only wish I had more time to review the
PowerPoint because I fumbled a couple of times during my presentation. I
feel that more practice time would have fixed this problem.
Data Based Decision Making
Based on the student work I graded, I know that the students understood the
concepts and listened during my presentation. Overall, I am pleased with the
experience.
