Teacher: Mr.

Faulkner
Date: March 4 2015

Class: 8th Grade Government

Period(s): 3rd

Grade: 8th

SOL: CE 10 a.
Objective:
After a lesson on Virginia and federal court system, the students will be able to describe the
similarities and differences between the state and federal court systems.
Criteria for success:
What I need to know: You will be able to describe the differences between the state and federal
government. To include the process of a bill becoming a law, and the structure of the court
systems.
Why I need to know it: Both the federal and state government have an impact on citizens daily
lives.
Ill know I know it when: I have taken notes and are able to explain the structure of the state and
federal government.
Activator: 2 Bell Work questions from the department list.
Supporting Resources:
Agenda, notebook, and writing utensil.
Learning Experience:
I will begin the class by reviewing their quiz from Tuesdays class. This quiz was on the process
of a bill to become a law. This allows for me to assess the students as well as the students to self
asses themselves and their knowledge on the process while the class moves on to the judicial
structure. The judicial structure was introduced on Tuesdays class, and the students took the
quiz. This class will allow for further explanation of the court systems. If students missed any
information for their notes they can add it in. Tuesday was also a compressed day to include
several students were out for the schools open house with the band, and the herpetology room.
Those students do not have notes on the court system and for these students it will be both their
introduction and explanation of the system. This class period will allow them to be caught up
with the rest of the class and at the same time be review and more in depth explanation of the
state court system.

Differentiation:
3rd period is a smaller class, with mostly cooperative and engaging students. This allows for
active participation and questioning for clarification. This sometimes can slow down the pace
while with their thorough grasp of the content they can also at times move quickly through slides
that require no further clarification. This section should need a low amount of clarification as
most of the process is easy to grasp and mostly just understanding the structure and order of the
state government.
Assessment: (Formative/Summative)
Throughout the class, as they are mostly participative I will ask verbal questions or repeat
information on the previous slide to see if the students are taking adequate notes on what I have
already said. This will allow for both assessment of their retention, but also a check to see if they
are on task taking notes. This also allows students to ensure their notes are matching with how I
pose the question.
The beginning of the class while going over the quiz from the previous class is the return of a
extended assessment and allows for my gained knowledge of their retention as well as the
students realizing their own level of knowledge.
Closure/Summarizer: I will ask at the end of the class how the court systems can impact their
lives. This will highlight civil cases as well as supreme court cases that can declare a law
unconstitutional.
