Standards:
CR.2.5.1
Develop skills in multiple art-making techniques and approaches through practice and
experimentation using grade-level appropriate elements of art and principals of design:
drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and mixed media.
R. 7.5.1 Compare interpretations of a work of art with ones own interpretation through
discussion.
Objective:
Students will be able to recognize, explain, and practice a still life. The students will create a
still life through a development of drawings.
Teaching The Lesson:
Before the introduction, I will be giving the students a pre-assessment by asking them to
attempt drawing a still life with the use of no erasers. This is will be part of my ILLPA.
Introduction (7 Minutes):
The introduction will begin by interesting the students in a PowerPoint that will contain images
of Cezannes work of still life. The images will be used to discuss how the artist picked certain
compositions and how the work illustrates positive and negative space. Also, discuss the
form/shape and proportion of the objects as well as the effect of overlapping and how it can help
create space. The students will take a minute to pair share with students at their desk about
certain artworks. Goal is to focus on higher level thinking questioning:
What are some reasons for why an artist would create still life images as a career?
Do you think some objects may be significant to the artist? Why or why not? What are
some examples?

Depending on the objects or the use of color, do you think that they create some sort of
mood? Why or why not? Use details from the work to justify your reasoning.

Use of Resources:
The PowerPoint will be used to introduce the students to the artist
The PowerPoint will be used to reinforce the students prior knowledge regarding space
and introduce what a still life is as well as a new artist.
ClassDojo will be used as a tool control classroom management.
Students will be responsible for passing out materials in a timely manner.

Demonstration (13 Minutes):

I will be doing a quick demonstration of the first part of the assignment that will take place
the first week of this two-week lesson plan. I will set a timer, pick a composition, and do a
quick sketch of the still life on the projector. Once the timer goes off, I will put my pencil
down. I will explain how we will be sketching out different compositions as a tool to think
about what we what to focus on for the following week. For next week, the students will
have to pick a composition from their sketches and do a final drawing of a still life.

Student Activity (30 Minutes)

The Assignment:
o Week One: When the timer begins, they will be doing quick sketches of different
compositions using different perspectives until the timer goes off.
o Week Two: The students will be using their sketches to decide which composition
they want to pursue for their final still life. The students will be using chalk/
pastel to help with the blending of colors and to get them started on thinking
about creating a certain mood for their still life.

Clean-up: Will be using class dojo to pick students to help clean up the materials such as
their papers, chalk, and pencils.

Discussion: Review what a still life is as well as what is important to think about in a still
life. Have the student evaluate himself or herself by filling out the ticket as a class.
