Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our recent Nature Week at the CNC was a huge success.
The children really enjoyed themselves and learned a
lot about Michigans history and had an introduction
to our next topic in science: rocks & soil. Be sure to
check our blog for photos from the week.
We will have an Authors Celebration on Monday,
June 1st at 10:30 AM in the library. It is expected to
last approximately one hour. I hope that you can join
us as we celebrate the growth that the third grade
writers have made this year.
If you plan to take your author to lunch after the
Authors Celebration, then please email me or send in
a note prior to the event. Please have your child
returned to the school by 1:00. Thanks!
Please see the Important Dates section of this
newsletter for upcoming events such as our classroom
awards ceremony, field day, and family picnic.

Reading
Our final fluency page went home with your child last
week. The end-of-the-year DIBELS reading fluency
assessment took place last week, and I am very pleased
to announce that our class made excellent growth this
year. Thank you so very much for taking the time to
listen to your child read aloud the fluency pages
multiple times each week. I couldnt have done it
without all of you!
Our lessons have focused upon informational text.
Weve reviewed these text features: table of contents,
headings, captions, tables, timelines, vocabulary words, glossary,
and index. Weve also covered the following text
structures: descriptive, sequence, comparison, and cause &

effect. You may wish to ask your child to explain each of

the words in italics prior to the quiz on Wednesday.

Writing
Research-based informational writing will be our final
focus in writing. We will review these principles: how
to avoid plagiarism, how to write complete
paragraphs, how to include illustrations with captions,
how to create a table of contents and a small glossary,
and how to appropriately cite resources.

Mathematics
Our final multiplication test will take place tomorrow.
The students have worked hard to master their facts.
Thank you for all of your support at home! Next, well
focus on fractions and have a geometry review.

Math Lab
We have been learning common types of word
problems and how to use comparison bars to solve
them. Our last math lab will be on Wednesday.

Science
We will have a quiz over chapter 13 (lessons 1, 2 & 4)
tomorrow. A study guide went home last week.

Social Studies
Our study of Michigan history is drawing to a close.
Next, well cover some basics of government and
economics.

Spelling
This Wednesday will be our final spelling test. Well
review spelling patterns for the remainder of the year.
