Critical Reflection and Big Picture Essay
In todays 21 century, society overtime has been thought to be a very judgmental group
st

of people. Racism, harsh judgement, and discrimination on gender are all major negative
qualities that people in the 21 century have learned and use in their daily lives. This may be a
st

good attribute, considering people may do it for their own positive protection. Although it may
be used for good, at the same time, the people judged may become offended or even falsely
accused risking the judgers safety. Judgement is formed from a specific frame of reference and
happens every day in reality, as well as outside of these works of literature. We as a society
should not be the ones to pass out judgement on others even before getting to know a person.
Judgments may likely come from ingrained perceptions that we as people are raised with.
My critical thinking for this AMS paper was pretty constructive. I had an idea on what
could be wrong with adult learning problems, and had picked my topic on how judgment may
likely come from ingrained perceptions that we as people are raised with. I decided my thesis:
Judgments may likely come from ingrained perceptions that we as people are raised with,

because it is a real problem. 21 century society overtime has been thought to be a very
st

judgmental group of people. My thesis was persuasive, and could be problematized, considering
many people may not see a problem with judgment. I made my points by looking at the real
problems that can take place, such as racism, harsh judgement, discrimination on gender and
physical appearance. All of these issues can be better prevented.
My rhetorical choices that I used to get my point across were to take a look at different
frames of references. I also took a personal look on how judgment can affect people and their
frames of references. Taking it from the academic level, people can be persuaded to change their
frames of references and judgment. Another standpoint that was looked at was from a more
personal level with the two different types of frames of reference, habit of mind, and point of
view. By showing people how each one works, it explains and defines the reasoning of peoples
actions. By showing these facts, I believe my point comes across very clearly; Judgments may
likely come from ingrained perceptions that we as people are raised with. With these points, I am
trying to reach the student body as an audience from an academic standpoint. My purpose is to
try to better prevent judgment on society.
I used credible articles to support my thesis in all of my points. The articles I used were
Transformative Learning: Theory to Practice written by Jack Mezirow, Paul Haggis movie
Crash, Black Men and Public Spaces, written by Brent Staples, and Officials question study
of city's young black men written by James Bock. I am becoming a credible academic writer by
using credible information from scholarly articles to support my claims and ideas. By knowing
how to use my resources, I have become a credible academic writer. I integrated the sources in

with my writing by having an idea of what I wanted to talk about and then searching for
supporting articles to help with the points I had.
The intellectual path I took was from personal experience. From seeing and reading all of
the judgment happening in the world, I felt that this would be a good topic to write about.
Making people aware of what the outcomes can really be for. When I revised my paper, I felt
maybe I needed to take a more argumentative approach to the paper, weighing in on both sides,
showing that my writing isn't biased to the reader.
Each of my sources talk about how frames of references and judgment can have all kinds
of effects on society and support my points very well. My understanding of each source was that
they were credible and factual. Each author made me think about all of the supporting evidence
that I could use in my paper. In using the sources, I searched for the best piece of supporting
evidence and quoted them in my paper, then explained what they meant to me, and why I chose
them for my paper. They were so well-placed that they were very self-explanatory. I didn't have
to spend a whole lot of time explaining the quote because it made perfect sense where I placed it
and how I used it.
I feel as if I have changed by becoming a better writer, an academic writer. I felt like I
had a better understanding for the AMS essay. I came across challenges with each paper, writing
only one before, but I met those challenges by learning from the constructive criticism, as well as
the few revision papers we have done. I have taken all of the corrections with me, learning from
the mistakes I had done, and used them for future papers such as the AMS paper.

The things I had learned in this class were how to become a better academic writer, and a
more competent writer. The most difficult thing to me had to have been the papers with the
revision process. I was not very good with the revision process, because I did not really have the
proper amount of time to have all of my papers looked at and revised. The choices I made to be
successful were to take the Movie Synthesis Essay: Academic Multi-Source Essay 1 (AMS1) and
turn it into the Adult Learning Problem Synthesis Essay: Academic Multi-Source Essay 2
(AMS2). The instructor challenged me in my rhetorical choices by working with new techniques
and using them in my newly revised papers.
